There are two versions of this story, one published in 1908 and another pieced together from newspaper accounts from 1835. George & his sons William, Leonard, Nathan, and a 12 year old cabin boy left New London, Connecticut on August 25, 1835. There were two smacks, that were separated when they ran into fog off Cape Hatteras, then sailed along the east coast when the hurricane struck the Keys on September 15, 16, 17 1835. The Key West Enquirer published September 26, 1835 said two sloops (Empress and the Gallant) had become lost, four men on board with one drowned. (George & William were on the Empress) Later editions of the New London Day paper had more data. The New London Day paper published November 16, 1908, 73 years later put together the story. The cabin boy survived and eventually made it back to New London. Leonard and his crew survived after losing their ship and swimming to shore and after several months were rescued off the beach. The 1908 and 1835 newspaper accounts do tell a slightly different story. The October 14, 1835 Connecticut Gazette further described what happened by publishing the September 27, 1835 letter written by the sole survivor of one of the smacks. This article details exactly what the name of the fishing smacks were, the exact names of the four men that drowned and that the exact date was September 15, 1835, the first day they went thru the hurricane force winds. The data was written by the sole survivor in the October 14, 1835 Connecticut Gazette. The Empress went ashore 15 miles south of what is Cape Canaveral, present day Cocoa Beach. Author Hank Klein has done extensive research and will have a book published in early 2017 on the entire Destin encounter.
