Mr. French died at the Ray County Memorial hospital Thursday evening, Oct. 4, 1979,of an apparent heart attack. He and his wife were involved in a one-car accident late Thursday morning near Lexington. Highway Patrol Troop A. Lee's Summit, said the accident occurred at 11:45 a.m.,as George D. French, 80, of 314 Jabez street, was eastbound on U.S. Highway 24 about three quarters of a mile east of the interchange of routes 13 and 24. The patrol spokesman said Mr. French apparently blacked out at the wheel of his 1969 Pontiac,causing the car to leave the right side of the road,the crossing over to the left side, where it struck a dirt embankment. Mrs. Verna French, 78, sustained a dislocated wrist and possible neck injuries in the accident. Both were brought to Ray County Memorial hospital, where Mr. French died that evening. Mrs. French was released from the hospital Saturday. Mr. French was born July 27, 1899 at Mercer, Mo.,the son of James and Lieurettie F. (Dale) French. A retired crane operator, he had lived in Lee's Summit and Liberty before moving to Richmond 11 years ago. He was a member of the New Salem Baptist church, Salem , Iowa , and the Masonic Lodge at Lamoni,Iowa . He was first married to Etta Mary Jeffries of Mercer. She died in 193 . He was married to Verna Bucy Barton of Princeton Oct. 20, 1935 and she survives. He is also survived by two sons; James French of Davenport , Iowa and Joseph H. French of Rexford , N.Y. ; one daughter, Mrs. Glen (Helen) Nichols of Grand River, Iowa; one step-daughter, Betty Fern Webster, of Leon , Iowa ; 13 grandchildren and 1- great-grandchildren. One son died in infancy.
