Description	:	George D. Smith died 11 p.m. Thursday at his home in Norfolk. "Mr. Smith had been ill for many months and had been confined to his bed for the past two months. Funeral services will be held from the family home here at 2:30 Monday afternoon. Mr. Smith, who retired several years ago, was a familiar figure in the city's business district. Funeral services will be held from the family home here at 2:30 Monday afternoon. Mr. Smith, who retired several years ago, was a familiar figure in the city's business district. He was known as the 'Abe Martin' of Norfolk and his witty sayings have been repeated by his friends for many years. He had a host of friends in and around Norfolk. He took an active part in politics until a few months ago when illness forced him to his home." "Mr. Smith came from a prominent family. His brother Clark Smith, who was a congressman from California for a number of terms and who made quite a record in Washington, died two years ago. Another brother Ed. P. Smith is the present mayor of Omaha. George D. Smith was born on a farm in Henry county, Ia., on April 18, 1847. He attended the country schools and the high school at Winfield, Ia. In 1867 he married Miss Eliza A. Smith who survives him. Mr. Smith was a natural farmer. For two years he conducted a farm in Henry county, Ia., and for ten years he was a successful farmer in Montgomery county of the same state. In 1882 he came to Madison county and farmed four and a half miles northwest of Norfolk. In January, 1919, he moved to Edgewater park addition." He was survived by 5 sons: George at Foster, William H. at Niobrara, Frank W. at Lamont, Iowa; Frederick who was with the Wyoming troops in France; 2 daughters: Mrs. James H. Deuel at Strawberry Point Iowa; Miss Etta Smith at Norfolk; 2 brothers: Ed P. at Omaha, Ethan E. at Spokane, Washington; 2 sisters: Mrs. Emma Cook, Mrs. Clara E. Cook both at Ventura, California. Davis officiating. Family plans to hold a simple funeral here were overruled by friends who declared that it should be held where the many friends of Mr. Smith could pay their respects by attending. Mayor Ed. P. Smith of Omaha was expected in time to attend the funeral of his brother. Mr. and Mrs. George Smith of Foster, William H. Smith of Niobrara and Roscoe C.
