He worked as a day laborer. ============================ The Morning Oregonian Portland, Oregon Wednesday, 23 April 1919 Page 5, Column 2 LAD, 17, HELD FOR KILLING JAMES VEST CHARGED WITH DEATH OF GEORGE RACETTE Driver of Car That Struck Resident of Tigard Is Returned Sailor and Has Police Record VANCOUVER, Wash., April 22. -(Special)- James Vest, about 17 years old, was arrested here on a charge of manslaughter on information furnished by Sheriff Alexander of Hillsboro, Or. Vest is alleged to be the lad driving the car which struck George Racette, 56 years old, near Tigard, Or., Sunday afternoon. A coincidence is that Mr. Racette was formerly a resident of this city and V. H. Limber, local undertaker, has brought the body to this city for interment. Funeral services for Mr. Racette will be held at 9 A.M. Wednesday morning, April 23, from St. James Catholic church. Rev. John Sweens officiating, and interment will be in the family plot in the Catholic cemetery. The body will be here at the Limber funeral parlors until Wednesday morning. Mr. Racette came to Vancouver from Kankakee, Ill. (33) years ago and lived her for 23 years. Ten years ago he went to Portland, living there until five years ago, when he removed to Tigard. His wife, Delia, survives as do two sons-Emil and Louis Racette-at home, and three daughters, Mrs. Sophia Fisher of Tigard, Mrs. Eva Seige of Tigard and Miss Leona Racette, at home. James Vest is a son of W. L. Vest of 1111 Main St., and is a sailor. He has a police record here, having recently been released after serving a sentence for burglary.
