Swecker died at his home, "Maple Grove" in Crabbottom at 4:30 p.m.., January 14, 1944, following a severe heart attack a few days before. He was born in Crabbottom, Highland County, Virginia, on December 27, 1864, the son of David W. Swecker and Celia Frances Eagle Swecker. Mr. Swecker spent his entire life in Crabbottom Valley where he was a well known churchman, teacher, banker, stockman and farmer. In early life he became united with the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church. He was, perhaps, the oldest member of his church at the time of his death, and certainly one of her most influential and highly esteemed members. Throughout the years of his life, he was actively identified with all the work of the church and at the time of his death he held the office of Ruling Elder in his church. Surely one of the greatest pleasures of his life was found in the giving of himself, his time and means for the advancement of God's Kingdom. In early life, Mr. Swecker was connected with the educational system of Highland County in various ways. He taught successful schools in various places of Blue Grass District. He served as School Trustee and Clerk of the School Board from 1910 until the present County Unit System was formed. In the financial world, Mr. Swecker was influential in the organization of one of Highland's most prosperous banks, The Crabbottom Valley Bank. Of this institution he was one of the charter members; one of the directors and Vice-President at the time of his passing. Mr. Swecker will be greatly missed in his community and his place will be most difficult to fill. He was a loyal and devout Christian gentleman; a man of strong convictions and of the highest integrity. The younger people of the community owe much to this good man for his sane advice, honest living and righteous example. From observations it can be truly said that he exemplified the "Golden Rule" in his dealings with all mankind. To know him was to love him, and to be in his home was a blessing. He did justly, loved mercy and went about doing good to his neighbors and friends. He was always interested in the progress of his community and friends, ever willing to give of his means, time and talent, when and wherever needed. Mr. Swecker married Miss Eliza Esta Judy June 5, 1892. To this union six children were born; Clara and Robert, deceased 1895; Mr. J. J. Swecker, Staunton, Virginia; Mrs. John E. Slaven, Richmond, Virginia; Miss Celia P. Swecker, Columbia, South Carolina; and Capt. Paul L. Swecker with the Armed Forces in England. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Martha Lautenschlager, Masillion, Ohio. Also, seven grandchildren survive. Funeral services were held from the Crabbottom Presbyterian Church, Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. E. Johnson, assisted by Rev. E. W. Dolan of the Crabbottom Methodist Church. A local choir rendered the hymns; "How Firm a Foundation," "Rock of Ages" and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." He was laid to rest in the Wimer Cemetery.
