In 1861 the family moved to Dubuque and in 1868 to Eldora where he has since resided. May 11, 1886 Mr. Gilman was married to Elizabeth Ardis Hamilton and to this union were born six children, all of whom are living. They are Josephine, Edmund, Charles, Jay, Abbie and Ardis. He is survived by his wife and mother, Mrs. C.C. Gilman; a sister, Mrs. Fannie W. Crockett and an aunt, Mrs. John Gilman of Mason City. In early life Mr. Gilman was located for a time at Perth Amboy where his father owned the Gilman Terra Cotta Works and during the New Orleans exposition he represented the firm at the exposition. He was one of the men who kept up the spirit that maintained in Eldora so long the famous Eldora Band and his magnificent figure as Drum Major was one of the strong points in the band's appearance on great occasions over the country. Mr. Gilman has been one of the standbys of the city of Eldora for many years. He was a man always interested in the welfare of his home town and was ever ready to give assistance to deserving projects. He was a good business man, careful and conservative and in his handling of the property of his niece, Miss Lois Wisner, of whom he was guardian, he showed himself a man of rare judgment and business acumen. Mr. Gilman has been associated with various enterprises and industries during his business life in Eldora. In 1896 he was associated with the firm of Meader & Gilman in the hardware business, later he was associated with Thomas Larson in the same business and in 1900 with W.W. Walker he engaged in the implement business. Mr. Gilman has served for a number of years as member of the City Council, was Mayor for four years and also served at times on the School Board. Mr. Gilman was a man of the strictest integrity, kind, courteous, true to his friendships and with a heart large enough for all his fellow beings. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 from the residence. Friends of the family were given an opportunity to view the remains Friday afternoon from 2:30 to 4 o'clock.
