Duane Eugene "Spike" Pitts (1938-1973) George was killed in a construction accident on February 9, 1943, in Ventura County, California. After George's death, Marjorie married Felix Grundy Carter. She died September 1, 1952, in Jones County, South Dakota. The following is from the Ventura County Star, 9 Feb 1943, page 1: FALL KILLS BASE WORKER George Pitts of Ventura was killed today in a construction accident at Port Heuneme naval base, Coroner Ted Mayr reported. Mayr said Pitts was critically injured at 8:45 a.m. when a boom broke, causing him to fall eight feet, and died at 11:15 a.m. at St. John's hospital, Oxnard. Further details of the accident were not immediately available. Pitts was said to have suffered multiple fractures of the face and skull. According to the coroner, the victim resided at 181 S. Santa Rosa street in Ventura. The body was taken to the Oliver L. Reardon and Sons mortuary in Ventura.
