Description	:	George Armstrong was born July 6, 1887 to Thomas Richard "TR" Armstrong and Alice Jane "Allie" (Moore) Armstrong Sullivan. He was the oldest of six siblings, and he had three older half siblings [on his father's side]. His middle name was said by family members to be Edward. George was probably named after his uncle, George Erwin Armstrong [a different middle name though]. George was probably named after his uncle, George Erwin Armstrong [a different middle name though]. In about 1894, when George was about 7 years old, he came with his parents to the Salem, South Dakota area to live on the family farm 7 miles southeast of town [near Canistota]. The 1900 US Census lists the family at Emery Township, McCook County, South Dakota. His father, T. R. Armstrong, farmed for a living, and his mother, Allie J. Armstrong, kept house and tended the six children; George age 12, Jessie (daughter) age 10, Robert age 8, Zula (daughter) age 6, and the twins, Leo and Letha age 4. All the children attended school that year, except the twins. George spent two years in Kearney, Nebraska from about 1907-1908, age 20-21, working for his maternal uncle, Deamas Moore, in his butcher shop. When he returned to South Dakota, George worked at F. T. Jackson's livery barn when he took ill on Friday morning, March 26, 1909 and was taken to the home of his employer, Mr. Jackson. George walked from the carriage to the house and went to bed, his last words were "Now I feel as if I can have a good sleep" and lapsed into a comatose state from which he never woke. He died at the Jackson home on Friday afternoon at 4:30, due to acute pneumonia. He was laid to rest at Wildwood Cemetery in Salem, South Dakota under a shared headstone with his sister, Bertha May Armstrong, who had died at three days old in 1906. Here is his obituary, transcribed by Linda Armstrong Pedersen from a newspaper clipping provided by Betty Earls. Original source and date unknown: This community was shocked beyond measure on Friday afternoon last to hear that George Armstrong was at the point of death. George had been in his usual health as far as was known to those closely associated with him until Thursday evening at about 10 o'clock when he was seized with a sudden chill while at his work at F. T. Jackson's livery barn. On Friday morning he was taken to the home of Mr. Jackson, walked from the carriage to the house, undressed himself and went to bed and his last conscious words were "Now I feel as if I can have a good sleep" and lapsed at once into a comatose condition from which he never rallied, passing away at 4:30 that afternoon, his death being due to a sudden filling of the lungs which occurs with acute pneumonia. George, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. armstrong, who reside on a farm 7 miles southeast of Salem, has lived amongst us almost continuously for ten years. He was a young man of sterling qualities as those who know him best will testify. Industrious and faithful in whatever he had to do, his place will be hard to fill and he will be greatly missed, by not only his family but a large circle of friends in and around Salem. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock, Rev. Whiteford preaching the sermon. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity and many stood outside to pay the last sad tribute to their friend. The casket was loaded with beautiful floral offerings and the choir sang his favorite hymn "Asleep in Jesus." The remains were followed to Wildwood cemetery by a long train of carriages and all that was earthly of George was given back to Mother Earth as he was left in that "good sleep" which is unbroken happiness for him. George Armstrong was born in Linn County, Iowa, July 6, 1887. When eleven years old he came with his parents to Salem and lived with them on the farm 7 miles southeast of town. Two years he spent the winter months at Kearney, Neb., working for his uncle. during the past few months he had been been [sic] with F. T. jackson in stock business and was a trusted and valued assistant. Relatives from a distance who were present at the funeral were George Armstrong and Will Armstrong, of Springville, Iowa, and T. Moore, of Martelle, Iowa, uncles of the deceased; his cousin, Hazard Moore, of Anamosa, Iowa, and his sister, Jessie Armstrong, from Kearney, Neb.
