He was preceded in death by his parents, George Edward Goodwin Sr. and Bertha Hopkins Goodwin and his wife of fifty-one years, Dorothy Witte Goodwin. George received a bachelors degree... Read More	George Edward Goodwin Jr., 90, of Lynchburg, Va., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Edward Goodwin Sr. and Bertha Hopkins Goodwin and his wife of fifty-one years, Dorothy Witte Goodwin. Born and raised in Marblehead, Mass., George graduated from Marblehead High School, where he earned letters in three sports. He received a scholarship to prep school at Worcester Academy, where he also earned three letters, and was part of the team that won the New England Prep School Football Championship in 1947. George received a bachelors degree from Tufts University in Medford, Mass., in addition to earning letters in football, baseball and basketball. While at Tufts, George was a member of the Theta Delta Chi Fraternity. Shortly after being drafted as a pitcher for the Red Sox Farm Team, George was drafted into the United States Army where he served two years during the Korean Conflict as a forward observer in the Seventeenth Field Artillery Battalion. George moved with his family to Lynchburg in 1956 when he was transferred by the General Electric Company, and he continued working for GE for thirty-two years. He was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, where he served on the vestry several times. He also served as senior warden and as chairman of the finance committee. George was an avid golfer, Red Sox fan, and duplicate bridge player. He also enjoyed collecting coins and investing in the stock market, as well as traveling, fishing with his grandson and relaxing with his family at Smith Mountain Lake. Left to cherish George's memory are his two daughters, Donna Goodwin Early and her husband, Denny Gene Early, Jr., of Roanoke, Va., and Pamela Gail Goodwin of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; his two grandchildren, Lauren Maxwell and her husband, Chris, and Tyler Early and his wife, Sarah Gayle; and his three beloved great-grandchildren.
