George was born June 1, 1933, at his grandparents’ farm house in rural Atkins, Iowa, the son of Charles and Anna (Lockhart) Hershey. He graduated from Atkins High School and then served in the United States Army. On December 2, 1967, in Edgewood, Iowa, George was united in marriage to Velma Darlene Romig. He was a farmer and also worked for the Linn County Roads Department until retiring in 1999. George was a member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed being outside on the farm, going to the casinos with his family and friends, drinking coffee with his buddies and catching up on the local town news. Most of all, George loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his three children, Ed (Karmen) Hershey of Alburnett, Cathy (Jeff) Pyle of Palo, and Kim (Jeremiah) McGraw of Alburnett; twelve grandchildren, Cavan, Nate, Adrienne, Kylee, Lakyn, Landon, Blaine, Aidan, Addyson, Carlyn, Cameron, and Joslyn; his sister, Betty (Marty) Bayer of Victor; and a host of extended family members including brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Velma; and two brothers, Howard in infancy and Harry Hershey. Memorials in George’s memory may be directed to the Alburnett Community Historical Society, P. O. Box 395, Alburnett, Iowa 52202. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the physicians, nurses, and staff that have cared for George during the last three years.
