Description	:	George E. Hackwell, 94, of Exira died November 26 at the Exira care center in Exira. The son of Edwin and Bertha Whaler Hackwell, he was born on his parents farm near Adair in Guthrie County on July 6, 1899. He attended the rural schools in Audobon Township and then helped operate the family farm. His marriage to Esther Josephsen took place December 26, 1926 and they farmed several places in Audubon and Cass counties until purchasing a farm east of Exira. The son of Edwin and Bertha Whaler Hackwell, he was born on his parents farm near Adair in Guthrie County on July 6, 1899. He attended the rural schools in Audobon Township and then helped operate the family farm. His marriage to Esther Josephsen took place December 26, 1926 and they farmed several places in Audubon and Cass counties until purchasing a farm east of Exira. His wife died March 21, 1976 and he continued to live on the farm until becoming a resident of the Exira care center in 1992. After retiring from farming he enjoyed gardening and working with flowers. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Melvin and Gladys Hackwell of the Vinita, Oklahoma, Jane and Leonard Schlater of Exira, Carol Benton of Atlantic, Marvin Hackwell of Exira, Gary and Martí Hackwell of Arvada, Colorado, Floyd and Gloria Hackwell of Exira; a son-in-law, Ronald Dorsey of Atlantic; 27 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lena Gebers of Arizona; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, June Dorsey; two sons, Ben in infancy and Harvey; his parents; his brothers and their wives, John and Goldie Hackwell, Edward and Marie Hackwell. Funeral services will be conducted by pastor David Todd at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 30 at the Exira Christian church and interment will be in the Exira Cemetery. Honorary casket bearers will be Clarence Christiansen, Earl Nancarrow, Dale Loukaitis and Jack Wyman. Casket bearers will be Robert Baylor, Norm Jayne, Lawrence Claussen, Herb Whalert, Dennis Immel and Ralph Wedemeyer. Kester funeral home of Exira is in charge of arrangements and open visitation will be at the funeral home. -Atlantic News Telegraph, November 29, 1993.
