Description	:	George Ellsworth Welder, 96, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Cedar's Assisted Living in Madrid. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 24, at Iles Funeral Homes, Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid. A private family committal service will take place on Saturday, August 25, at Fairview Cemetery, north of Madrid. A private family committal service will take place on Saturday, August 25, at Fairview Cemetery, north of Madrid. George was born the son of Harry E. and Rose Belle (Sturdivant) Welder on July 22, 1916 at Camp Dodge in Polk County, Iowa. He grew up and attended schools in the Luther-Madrid area. On April 18, 1936, George married the love of his life, Frances Alice Hedlund, and their marriage was blessed with two sons, Donald L.R. Welder and Ronald G. Welder. During his lifetime, George worked as a farm hand, on the Milwaukee Railroad, for the International Harvester/Pontiac Dealership in Madrid, and co-owned and operated Welder's D-X with his son, Donald for 18 years. Upon it's closing, he worked as a custodian for the Madrid School District for several years. During his retirement, George loved spending time with his family, vintage cars, tinkering in his garage, camping, volunteering at the school and reading L'Amour westerns. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 76 years, Frances Welder of Madrid; sons, Donald (Margaret) Welder of Madrid and Ronald (Myrna) of Fort Madison; and four grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one stepsister; and one daughter-in-law. Because of George's love of reading with the school kids and for his own pleasure, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be given to the Madrid Public Library.
