Description	:	George E. Appel was born June 18, 1918 in Casper, Wyoming to George and Mary (Hergert) Appel. George and Mary were a part of the German contingent who had immigrated to the Colfax area from Russia in the early 1900s. The elder George was the brew master in Colfax when Washington State went dry before the rest of the country. His company transferred him to Casper, Wyoming, where young George was born, the youngest of George and Mary's nine children. Appel was born June 18, 1918 in Casper, Wyoming to George and Mary (Hergert) Appel. George and Mary were a part of the German contingent who had immigrated to the Colfax area from Russia in the early 1900s. The elder George was the brew master in Colfax when Washington State went dry before the rest of the country. His company transferred him to Casper, Wyoming, where young George was born, the youngest of George and Mary's nine children. The family moved back to Colfax in 1920 when Prohibition resulted in the closure of the brewery in Casper. Young George worked hard as a young man farming with his father and later as a carpenter, the profession he pursued the rest of his life. George graduated from Colfax High School in 1938 and married his high school sweetheart, Elmina Lowe, in November of 1941. George and Elmina were doing one of their favorite activities, taking a ride in the country, when they heard on the radio that Pearl Harbor had been attacked and President Roosevelt had declared war. He turned the car around, they drove back into Colfax, and he enlisted in the Army. George and Elmina had been married only a couple of months when he left for basic training. George served with the Company A 398 Combat Engineers beginning in March of 1942. He was home on leave after VE Day, before shipping out for the Pacific, when the Japanese surrendered. He was discharged in October of 1945. George was known to his family as the original "Good Sam," always ready and willing to help out a friend or a stranger. He was a skilled woodworker, filling his retirement years making treasured gifts for family and friends. He loved the outdoors and watching the birds and deer, which frequented his yard. He enjoyed site seeing and traveling the back roads, especially his beloved Palouse hills, which he referred to as "God's Country." His wife Elmina preceded him in death in 1991. ==========================================
