George Elmer Smith was born Sept. 30, 1864, and departed this life July 15, 1937, at the aged of 72 years 9 months and 15 days. His death was the result of a fall last Sunday P.M. at the home of his daughter Mrs. Irven Snedeker where he was lovingly cared for until the end. Everything within human power was done to save him but God did not deem it best to spare his life and when God calls we must answer. Fifty years ago next month, (on Aug 23, 1887) he was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Swaim, who preceded him in death 25 years ago and to this union was born fourteen children, twelve of whom remain to mourn the loss of their father, John of Bell View, Fla., Mrs. Nancy Carson, Mrs. Margaret Snedaker, Marten and Adren Smith all of near West Lafayette, Souders of near Birmingham, Mrs. Lillie Harding of Freeport, Mrs. Florence Merritt, Mrs. Susie Cook and Mrs. Minnie Britton of Canton; Leonard of Newcomerstown and Charles of Ravena. Two daughters, Mrs. Mary Kennedy and Mrs. Ona Dean are deceased. Mr. Smith is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice Casterline of Middlebourn; one brother Porter Smith of near Center; 29 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren besides a host of neighbors and friends. Mr. Smith was a good neighbor and a kind friend, always ready to lend a helping hand and he will be greatly missed in the community where he had lived for so long, as well as a father in his home where his children loved to visit.
