As had been his custom for a number of years, Mr. Miller spent the past winter in Long Beach, Calif. He suffered considerably with rheumatism while he was there and his condition grew worse following his return to Choteau last April. This was regarded as one of the direct causes of his death. Mr. Miller's parents were hardy pioneers of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and he was born on that island April 29, 1858, making him 77 years of age last April. His father was George Miller and his mother was Jane Farquharson Miller. Young George was brought up on his father's farm and attended school during the winter months until he was 13 years of age. The next seven years were spent mostly at home and then for a while he went to sea, working mainly on boats plying between Halifax and St. John. A short while later he started west and came up the Missouri in an old river boat, arriving in Fort Benton in 1881. His uncle, John Miller, was already in Montana and young George formed the opinion from literature that fell into his hands and other sources that Montana was a land of great promise. "I expected to make a barrel of money in three years and go back," he used to say, "but at the end of five years I was still here and didn't have any money either." His first year in Montana was spent working at a brick yard at old Fort Assiniboine. He then came up the Teton and obtained a preemption claim on Willow creek. This he sold in 1884 and took up a homestead on the north fork of Willow creek. He gradually increased his holdings to a ranch of 2,080 acres and became one of the prominent livestock growers of the county in the old days of the open range, chuck wagons and the big roundup. In 1916 he sold his ranch to Conrad Sack and resided with his family for about three years on a ranch a mile west of town where his eldest son, Robert, now resides. In the spring of 1920 he established a home in the Cowgill addition and there resided, except for periodic absences, until the time of his death. On Nov. 15 he was united in marriage to Ellen Cox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cox, who arrived in Montana as early as 1879. They came to Teton county in 1884 from Gallatin county and Mr. Cox took up a homestead on Willow creek not far from the Miller place. The romance between the young people began at that time and the marriage occurred about a year later. Their first child, Lottie, died at about six years of age. Another daughter, Ida, died in 1922 when 22 years of age. Surviving children are Robert, of Choteau, Harry, of St. Ignatius, Mrs. Carrie Bagley, of Choteau, and Mrs. Hattie Lyons, of Choteau. Mrs. Miller also survives. In politics Mr. Miller was a republican and he took an active interest in public affairs. From 1906 to 1912 he was a member of the board of county commissioners and was made a member of the state association of county commissioners for services rendered. He was at one time a member of the board of directors of the Citizens State bank and also of the Stockmen's State bank. As a member of the Choteau Lodge No. 44, A.F. and A.M., he was prominently identified with masonry. He was one of the charter members of Teton's Oldest Settlers. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Methodist church. The remains were interred in the family plot in Choteau cemetery.
