He was bom [sic] June 25, 1914, in Rural Geary County, son of Frank and Ellen Jones Thoes. He attended Wabaunsee County schools and was graduated from Alta Vista High School. Mr. Thoes was employed at the Sunflower Ordinance Plant at Eudora during World War II. Later he worked at the Delavan Air Base and at Beech Aircraft in Wichita. The family returned to the farm north of Council Grove and operated a dairy. Mr. Thoes was a member of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and the Kansas Artificial Breeders Association. He was a school board member in rural Morris County. Also, he was actively involved with 4-H leadership for many years and served as president of the Morris County Extension Council, and received a Morris County Soil Conservation award. Mr. Thoes was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church here. He served it as a trustee. He was married to Sclma [sic] Borkert November 27, 1938, in Council Grove. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Sandra Campbell, Buena Vista, Colo., and Judi Gaut, Topeka; a sister, Mildred Bennett, Derby; and three grandchildren, Scott Campbell, Buena Vista, Stacy Campbell, San Francisco, Calif., and Andrew Gaut, Baltimore, Md. Services will be Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Kendall Funeral Chapel, with burial to be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Thoes will lie in state at the Kendall Funeral Cahapcl [sic] from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday. Memorials have been established with the Calvary Lutheran Church and the Twin Lakes Health Care Center.
