Read More	The Hooper Sentinel December 25, 1958 George Gotfried Wagner George Gotfried Wagner was born October 7, 1879 at the farm home in the Logan community three miles northwest of Hooper, of pioneer parents, George and Roseina Wagner, the fifth child in a family of nine. He had his schooling at Logan School nearby, and was confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church of Hooper, March 18, 1894. He was married to Rose Katherine Richardson on January 28, 1903, at Fremont. The couple began farmlife in the Alder Grove community in November 1903. To this union two children were born, Earl George Henry and Fern Elizabeth. The couple joined in the work of the Alder Grove Methodist Church at once, and have so continued ever since. The couple retired from active farm duties on March 1, 1953, and moved to Tekamah, where Mr. Wagner continued to work in the life of the church and community. He suffered a light stroke on October 31, 1957, and his health failed until he passed away on December 11, 1958, at his home, at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 4 days. Survivors include his wife, Rose; son Earl, daughter Mrs. Harold Johnson, both of Craig; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Also two brothers, Frank of Neligh, and Carl W. of Hooper. His parents, four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Buried - Craig cemetery, Craig, NE. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The History of Alder Grove Pages 212 - 213 The George Wagner Family George Wagner (October 22, 1879 - December, 1958) originally from northeast of Hooper, near the present Logan View school, and his wife Rosa (Rose) Richardson of Argo, were married on January 28, 1903 in Fremont . George was the son of George and Rosina Wagner and the grandson of George Wagner (1809 - 1865) who came from Baden, Germany in 1864. George and Rose Wagner moved to Alder Grove in March, 1904 when they purchased the Randall homestead from Albert C. Randall. This homestead was located adjacent to the Alder Grove school. George farmed this land for 38 years, retiring and moving to Tekamah in 1942. George was very active in community affairs. He helped organize the Grange and later was a very active member of the Farmer's Union. At one time he served as president of the Burt Co. Farmer's Union. He raised purebred Duroc hogs and Hereford cattle. He was on the board of the Craig Telephone Co. Rose was mid-wife for the community for a number of years, 1905- 1925. She was a most sympathetic and caring person. She had a very wide circle of friends and was well-known by many generations of students and teachers at the Alder Grove school. Several stayed with the Wagner family as they taught at Alder Grove. George and Rose were active members of the Alder Grove church. George and Rose Wagner's children: 1. Earl (November 4, 1903 -April 30, 1990) attended Alder Grove school from 1909 to 1920, graduating from the 10th grade. He graduated from Craig H. S. in 1922. Earl farmed with his father for a number of years. He married Ethel Petersen on February 12, 1928 at the Alvis Petersen home near Admah. At this time Earl and his father purchased the McMullin farm. Earl farmed this land in section 22 from his marriage until he turned the farm over to his son Darrell in 1958. Earl and Ethel continued to live on another farm 3 miles west of Alder Grove until complete retirement in 1977 when they moved to Oakland. Ethel still lives in Oakland. Earl and Ethel Petersen Wagner's children: a. Donna Lea, born January 19, 1929 attended Alder Grove School, 1933 - 1944. She was the last graduate of Alder Grove high school. She attended Tekamah H. S. and graduated in 1946. She then worked in Wayne and Omaha as a secretary. She married Victor Mondello. They have two boys and two girls. She lives in Stoneham, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. b. Darrell was born August 29, 1933. He attended Alder Grove school 1938 - 1947. He graduated from Tekamah H. S. in 1951. He farmed with his father from that date. He married Joyce Ruwe of rural Hooper on August 17, 1958. Joyce and Darrell have farmed the McMullin farm in section 22 from 1958 to the present. Joyce works as a medical records clerk at the Blair Clinic and is organist at Alder Grove church, Darrell is a member of the board of Ag-Land Cooperative and the Burt County Public Power District. Darrell and Joyce's children: (1) Lori, born May 28, 1962, attended Alder Grove school, 1967 to 1974. She graduated from Logan View H. S. in 1980. She graduated from Wayne State College in 1984 with a marketing degree. She married Gene Scholl on August 16, 1986. Lori works in an insurance office in Fremont and her husband is in construction. (2) Tim was born October 16, 1963. He attended Alder Grove school 1968 -1976 and graduated from Logan View H. S. in 1982. He married Rose Hilliard on August 17, 1985. Tim and Rose have one daughter, Tiffany. Tim presently farms at Alder Grove on the Marian Loftis-Flora Loomis McPherson farm and works for a grain company in Fremont. c. Shirley was born September 23, 1942, attended Alder Grove school 1947- 1956. She graduated from Craig H. S. in 1960. She married Don Uhing of Craig on August 10, 1962. They have farmed for many years in the north Argo area. They have 3 children. Shirley has worked as a teller in the Farmer's and Merchant's Bank of Oakland for six years. 2. Fern was born January 7, 1906. She attended Alder Grove school from 1910 to 1921, graduating from Alder Grove H. S. She taught piano and music for a number of years prior to her marriage, riding a horse from home to home. She married Harold V. Johnson, son of Arvid Johnson on March 28, 1928 at Swaburg. Harold and Fern farmed at Alder Grove from 1928 until 1978. They lived on several farms from 1928 until 1942, farming the George Wagner place next to the Alder Grove school from 1942 until 1953. They then lived for a number of years on the Lee Bovee farm and also lived on the Benjes- Bartling place in front of the Alder Grove church. Fern and Harold were involved in many community activities. They directed the choir at the Alder Grove church for many years. They also played at many weddings and funerals and directed musical groups in 4-H clubs. Harold played the violin, Fern the piano and they sang many duets. Fern and Harold moved to Craig in 1978 and lived there in retirement. Harold and Fern had three sons, Merle, Roger and Ramon. Fern died on April 6, 1991 at 85 years of age.
