Curtiss, a civil engineer and prominent teacher in this county, died at an early hour this morning at his place, "Oakland," near Bagley post office, from pneumonia, after a brief illness. Curtiss, a civil engineer and prominent teacher in this county, died at an early hour this morning at his place, "Oakland," near Bagley post office, from pneumonia, after a brief illness. For about 40 years Prof. Curtiss has lived at "Oakland" where for many years he conducted a boarding school, and in the summer entertained many boarders. He had quite a reputation as a teacher and surveyor, and at his school many of the public school teachers were educated. He first taught in Harford County at Union Chapel, near Jerusalem. Mr. Curtiss was born in New England, and was about 75 years of age. He was an 1848 graduate of Brown University in Rhode Island. He married Miss Mary Ellen Lewis, daughter of Joseph and Hannah Lewis, of this county. A widow and six children survive him-- Misses Ida, Dora, Marian, Eva, and Ethel, and a son, Joseph. His daughters are all engaged in teaching, one in the kindergarten of the Friends' School, Baltimore, and the others in this county. His son, Mr. Joseph Curtiss, is engaged in farming. Curtiss came to Maryland as a young man, became the Principal of a large school, and was soon recognized as the most prominent educator in Harford County. He especially excelled in mathematics; he was a worthy representative of the highest type of New England culture, which combined with purity of life, greatly influenced his pupils for good, many of whom will bless and revere his memory. He never became a member of the Society of Friends, although always in full unity with its leading principles. A student of nature, his enlightened intellect could readily recognize in her mysteries the hand of Deity, whom he devoutly but unostentatiously worshiped and adored. (Steiger's Educational Directory for 1878, p.306) George G. Curtiss established the Fallston Weather Station many years before weather observations were forecast in the area. His Fallston Station served as a branch of the Baltimore Weather Bureau located at the Custom House, and was one of the first to offer to cooperate. By 1922, the Fallston Weather Station was 1 of 10 in Maryland with records equaling, or exceeding, that of the Baltimore office.
