George Harry Lermeny was born on September 17, 1920 on the family ranch, in their rock house near Reva, SD, the son of Jule and Marie (Verhulst) Lermeny. He was the youngest of two children. He had an older sister Louise. George received his education by attending school at Grandview School, Reva School and he also attended one year of schooling in San Bernadino, CA when his family traveled to California due to his father's illness. As a young man, there wasn't anything that didn't interest him. He loved to study, even reading the encyclopedias, and he had a natural knack for mathematics. He would stay up many nights just studying. When George was 12, he took correspondence classes in electronics. He learned how to build radios, radio receivers, rewound generators, he built welders, electric motors and could recoil armatures. George worked for many of the area neighbors. He also worked construction and sheared sheep with the Howard Millett Crew. George could build or fix most anything. When George wasn't working or tinkering in electronics, he enjoyed the good old American pastime of playing baseball. He loved to play and he was a pitcher for the Reva Longhorns. He traveled with his team from community to community to play games. After completing his baseball career, George picked up the game of pitching horseshoes, a game he enjoyed so much that he even made his own pits at home to practice. These pastimes created many lifelong friendships. George was also a pilot and had a love for music, playing harmonica and singing. George was also drafted into the United States Army where he traveled to Fort Snelling, MN for basic training until being sent home early due to the end of World War II. On August 23, 1951, George was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ardis "Collie" Maney in Buffalo, SD. After their marriage, they made their home on the Lermeny Ranch near Reva and raised six children – Mark, Derek, Monica, Meria, YoLanda and Bridget. George lived his entire life 75 steps from the place he was born. He enjoyed working in general, especially with his cattle and the land. He built a grain elevator on the ranch in the mid 1950's. He did most of the work himself and it was the first one standing in Harding County. It took him nearly four years to complete. He also served on the board for the Farmers Home Administration for several years. He was very instrumental in all aspects of the church, from moving churches, to building foundations and all other upkeep and maintenance. He was the treasure of the Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church for many years. Most of George's life was dedicated to building the Lermeny Ranch. He loved his wife and kids and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George was a wonderful man who touched the lives of many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. George is survived by his wife Ardis "Collie" Lermeny of Reva, SD; sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Marcia (Heggem) Lermeny and Derek and Joyti (Anderson) Lermeny; daughters and sons-in-law: Monica and Dan Thompson, Meria and Raydelle Sperle, YoLanda and Gary Martian and Bridget Teigen; 23 grandchildren: Erin (Josh) Klempel, Margo Lermeny, Dillon (Julia) Lermeny, Chance (Casey) Lermeny, Tex Lermeny, Stormy Lermeny, Fancy Lermeny, Sassy Lermeny, Mindy (Sam) Augare, Jeff (Jo) Thompson, Amy (Jordan) Binstock, Jamey (Sarah) Sperle, Taylor Sperle, Mackenzie Sperle, Savanna Sperle, Jewel (Randy) Lyons, Medora (Corey) Stevenson, Tara Martian, Miranda Martian, Codi Teigen, Kayla Teigen, Mason Teigen, and Anna Teigen; ten great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Margaret Leger and Elaine (Joe) Verhulst; an Aunt Lila Verhulst; nephew Bob Jones; along with several other nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, Jule and Marie (Verhulst) Lermeny; his sister Louise Jones; two grandchildren, Eric Lermeny and Amanda Martian; and one son-in-law, Will Teigen.
