SMITH - In Albion Twp., Howard County, Iowa, April 19, 1891, George Henry Smith, aged 62 years, 9 months and 18 days. ANOTHER PIONEER GONE. George Henry Smith of Albion Twp., died at his residence Sunday, April 19, at 6 pm., after a painful illness from acute gastritis. During the last few years he had suffered from frequent attacks of disease, and so severe were these that he sometimes expressed a desire to go and be at rest rather than live and suffer. The deceased was born in Rockbridge County, Va., July 1, 1828, and moved with his parents to Illinois, June 8, 1839. The family settled in Freeport, III., in 1843, and in 1851 George was married to Miss Catharine Osborn of that place, who survives him. Mrs. Smith has been sick several weeks and during her husband's illness it seemed doubtful whether she would not precede him in the journey across the dark river. But she is still spared to her family and it is hoped she may recover. Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Howard county, Iowa, and settled in Albion township June 20, 1856, where they have resided ever since. They have always been known by their neighbors as industrious and honest people and kind neighbors, ever ready to assist in time of trouble, and will be missed by their old neighbors and all who have known them well. Mrs. Smith in her own sickness and in her bereavement, and the children have the sympathy of the community. The funeral services were held at the family residence at 10 a.m. Wednesday of this week. Friends from Illinois are expected to attend the funeral. The family wish the writer to express their thanks to the neighbors and friends who have assisted them in this their time of affliction. Thus are passing away the generation who came in the van of civilization, changing this country from the condition of the prairie unbroken, for ages the home only of the roving Indian and the buﬂ‘a1o, to that of the cultivated farm and the home of a civilized race - the peers of any people. Let Iowa exult in her present prosperity and glory, but let her not forget the pioneers who made present conditions possible. May they rest in peace, but ever live in the grateful remembrance of those who succeed them. On information received from a relative, George Henry Smith moved to Illinois in 1831 and settled in Freeport, IL 08 Jun 1833.
