Leslie, a Clinton painter and paper hand, aged about 33 years, to his wife from whom he had parted, at he fired a bullet from a 32 calibre revolver into his brain, and fell dead in a doorway on Second street shortly after midnight Sunday morning. The woman ran screaming from his side and the police were notified, removing the body to an undertaking establishment. The woman was held Sunday for invesitgation, and was released when the facts of the case were learned. The stairway south of Robert Read's restaurant, leading to apartments on the second floor which the woman occupied, was the scene of the suicide early Sunday morning. The couple were married in Anamosa, 12 years ago, and both come from prominent families. The wife's father is Nathaniel Sweet, a farmer living near Anamosa, while the father of the dead man is Joseph Leslie, a Cedar Rapids stationary engineer. The have four children, two of which are adopted out. Mr.and Mrs. Leslie came to Clinton about a year ago, having lived at Anamosa, Davenport, and Rock Island and Carbondale, Illinois. Six weeks ago the couple separated after repeated quarrels, Leslie taking the little boy and his wife the girl. Mrs. Leslie has been employed the past few weeks in the Read restaurant, and Leslie has been engaged in odd jobs about the city. Saturday night Mrs. Leslie was in the company of Nellie Lybert and a gentleman friends of hers, and shortly before midnight they went into the Italian restaurant near Read's where they were eating ice cream when the husband entered. He directed his conversation to Miss Lybert, saying: "I hear you have threatened to shoot me, Nell," according to the story Mrs. Leslie told the police Sunday. The girl denied haviing said such a thing, of even having thought of it. Leslie, thereupon put the gun back into his pocket, and walked out, the three following him. Mrs. Leslie and her husband stepped into the dorway leading to the women's apartments, where her two little children were sleeping, and the painter asked his wife to go to his room with him, appearing desirous of making up the disagreement which had lead to their separation a few weeks ago. Mrs. Leslie says she wished to go to her own rooms; but that she would to with him the next evening. She noticed him put his hand into his pocket just then, and, with the remark, "Well, Babe, I guess I'll end it all now," snap the trigger. The first time the gun did not explode. Again he snapped the weapon, and a bullet went crashing into his brain, death resulting in a few minutes. The noise of the pistol shot and the screaming of the woman soon collected a crowd, and Mrs. Leslie was taken to the city jail, while the dead body of the Clinton painter was removed to a local undertaking establishment , and prepared for burial. In jail Sunday morning the woman and her two children occupied the woman's cell, she told a Herald reported that one of her adopted children had a home in Cedar Rapids, and the other in Kansas. These children are aged 5 and 3 years, the two who are in Clinton being somewhat older. Mrs. Leslie claimed that she had no idea that her husband contemplated self destruction, and she was too frightened to move when she saw him pull out the gun and hold it against his head.
