George Jacob "Jake" Crone, 68, of Lafayette, died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, August 9th, 2012 in the IU Health Arnett Hospital of Lafayette, Indiana.
As strong as this man was he simply could not win the battle against cancer that he had been fighting against since January of 2009.
Life was given to Jake by the late William and Pearl (Posten) Crone on December 12, 1943 in Oakhill, West Virginia. Jake boasted of his West Virginia roots on a regular basis, and how his dad was a Coal Miner.
As a child, Jake's family moved to Monon and then to Goodland where he graduated from high school. During his teenage years, Jake relished life on the edge and continued to live as a free spirit throughout his life.
Mr. Crone was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Jake's tour of duty included stints in Okinawa, Japan and Vietnam. Jake was always applauded in the military for his superior gunmanship.
As a young man and ex-marine, Jake wedded Catherine Lynn Deno in 1966 and fathered 4 children with her. They remained married for 20 years.
Even though he had a family, Jake continued to follow his dreams, sojourning to places he lived and loved. With a passion for speed Jake was known to race his motorcycles, Corvette and fly planes. Reflecting his perseverance, Jake worked and excelled at ALCOA in Lafayette for 36 years until retiring in 2009 due to his failing health.
As a part of his journey, Jake mentored and advocated for hundreds of people in various ways. Jake's irreverent and outrageous sense of humor drew people to him.
Surviving are his fiancé, Debra Hill and his children, Bryan Crone of Dayton, NV, Monet Hardesty (husband: Anthony) of Lafayette, Kelly Collum of Phoenix, AZ and Jesse Crone (wife: Rachel) of Lafayette; his brothers, Charles Crone (wife: June) of Sterling, MA, Robert Crone (wife: Carolyn) of Monon, Butch Crone (wife: Kelly) of Kingsford Heights, IN, Jimmy Crone of Los Angeles, Dean Crone of Morocco; two sisters, Norma Copas (husband: Norman) of Earl Park and Mary Sharp (husband: David) of Williamsport; his grandchildren, Nathan, Brandi, Nichelle, Catherine, Jammie, Jesse, Rachel, Monet, Robert and his two great-grandchildren, Faith and Jayden.
