Description	:	"Empire Builder" George Lafayette Carter grew up on his parents small farm, not far from Hillsville, Virginia. At the age of 16, he began working at Johnson's General Store in Hillsville, and then was employed as bookkeeper, buyer and eventually manager of the Wythe Lead and Zinc Mine company in Austinville, Virginia. Read More	"Empire Builder" George Lafayette Carter grew up on his parents small farm, not far from Hillsville, Virginia. At the age of 16, he began working at Johnson's General Store in Hillsville, and then was employed as bookkeeper, buyer and eventually manager of the Wythe Lead and Zinc Mine company in Austinville, Virginia. He then went to Dora Furnace Company, Pulaski, as vice president and general manager, and later as president. From there, he applied for financing from investors in New York and developed Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Company across Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Mr. Carter purchased two railroads and devoped additional coal mines. Other additions came under the operation as The Carter Coal and Iron Company. A wealthy man now, he became quite a philanthropist, donating $100,000 and 150 acres on which East Tennesee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee was built. There is a George Lafayette Carter museum at that university. He owned much property in Bristol and Kingsport, Tennessee, was the owner of the company coal town of Coalwood, West Virginia, and created the CC&O, Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railroad. In 1922, Carter sold his holdings to Consolidated Coal Company of New York for 17 million dollars. George Carter died of pneumonia in a Washington, DC hospital, and his son James Walter Carter took over his businesses. GEORGE L. CARTER BURIED FRIDAY - HUNDREDS ATTEND FUNERAL FROM OLD MANSION AT HILLSVILLE Hillsville, Va. (Special) - Simple funeral services were held at his home here at 1 p.m. Friday for George L. Carter, "empire builder" of Southwest Virginia, who died in Washington Wednesday. Hundreds of persons, including many high in business and finance, attended the rites. Services were held in the drawing room and were conducted by Mr. Carter's brother-in-law, Dr. M.W. Doggett, of Kingsport, Tenn. Dr. Doggett read the funeral service and followed this with the reading of the hymn, "Jesus Lover of My Soul." Two adjoining rooms in the mansion were filled with floral tributes. The procession to the private cemetery at the top of a hill overlooking the Carter estate was led by the junior drum and bugle corps of Hillsville. Here prayer was pronounced and the coffin lowered into a vault. Active pallbearers were nephews and other kinsmen of Mr. Carter. They were Raymond Jennings, Barnard Jennings, Robert Wilkinson, Marshall Doggett, J. Fred Johnson, C.A. Hale, Arthur J. Edwards, S.R. Jennings and Robert Early. Mr. Carter died in a Washington hospital after a long illness of pneumonia. He was 79 years old. Born in Hillsville, he went to work at the age of 13. He was a pioneer in coal mine development and railroad building in Southwest Virginia, amassing wealth estimated in the millions.
