Description	:	November 14, 1901 unknown newspaper George Lawrence, sen. was born at Blackford, Perthshire, Scotland, Nov. 11th, 1828 and was married to Helen Fraser of Edinburgh April 19th, 1852, and in a few hours bid adieu to friends and relatives and took passage on a ship that immediately set sail for America. They arrived in Cleveland Ohio in June. They made Cleveland their home for five years. Mr Lawrence working at the trade of stone dressing and laying, which he had learned when a young man in his native land. In the spring of 1857 he came to Mt. Pleasant to work on the Iowa Hospital which was being built at that time. This building was to be of dressed stone and the state was paying good wages for stone cutters and layers. He worked here until the hospital was completed then moved on a farm in Tippecanoe township. In spring of 1866 he bought the farm southwest of Mt. Pleasant, where he has lived ever since. He was killed the 27th of last September in a runaway accident at his home. He went to the field with a team of horses to haul in a load of pumpkins. Just how the accident happened is not known. He was last seen standing on the ground near the head of the horses. Something scared them and they ran way. Mr. Lawrence was thrown down and both wheels of the loaded wagon passed over him, killing his almost instantly. Mr. Lawrence leaves a wife and one son, George Jr. who lived with them. Another son, Robert, lives near La Hoyt; Mrs. James Lusk, of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Ed Barton, of Salem, are daughters. Mr. J.A. Allender of the west side restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, was the husband of one of Mr. Lawrence's daughters, now deceased; and another daughter, the wife of T.A. Niece, of the east side hardware store died last May. The funeral was held at the home on Sunday afternoon, September 29th, Rev. Nicholas, the Presbyterian minister, officiating. The funeral was largely attended and a Large concourse of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place in Forest Home Cemetery.
