George, the son of the late E.A. and Dovie Murrel Foster, was born in Tipton County, near Atlanta, on March 21, 1922. He lived in Tipton throughout his life and both believed in and contributed to the growth of the community. George, the son of the late E.A. and Dovie Murrel Foster, was born in Tipton County, near Atlanta, on March 21, 1922. He lived in Tipton throughout his life and both believed in and contributed to the growth of the community. Mr. Foster graduated from Tipton High School in 1940 and married Marjorie Jeanne Hackett on January 12, 1943, one day before he left to serve his country in World War II. When he returned, he continued in business, owning and operating Foster Furniture Store, with the help of his wife, Marge, for forty-nine years before he retired. He remained an active member of the business community as the owner of “Foster’s Last Stand” Antique Store for several years before he agreed to serve the community as President of the Tipton County Council and as Mayor of Tipton for seven years. He was honored by the Area Five Agency on Aging and Community Services in 2001 as “Older Hoosier of the Year” for his community service. Mr. Foster proudly served his country during WW II on Okinawa in the Pacific Theatre as Chief Radar Operator with the 325th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion, receiving a Bronze Star for his efforts. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elks Club and Rotary during his long and fruitful life. George’s wife, Marjorie, passed away on February 18, 2012 and will be waiting for him. Left to cherish and honor his life and legacy are his children Lee-Anne Distler (Bill), Julia Lambert (Destry) and George Lee “Chip” Foster II (Sheri); grandchildren Jenny Distler Stribling (Yancey), Katie Distler Eckman (Scott), Nathan Destry Lambert (Stephanie), Kristin Lambert Himsel (Nate), Lindsay Lambert Blythe (Jason); and great-grandchildren Henry Nathan, Marjorie Jane and Julia Farrell Lambert; George Hunter and Margaret Armstrong Eckman; William Foster and James Yancey Stribling IV; Destry Thomas and Piper Kate Himsel, Lincoln Lambert and Knox Brantley Blythe. Private family services are planned through Young-Nichols Funeral Home with burial at Fairview Cemetery, Tipton with military rites. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the C.W. Mount Community Center, c/o Tipton County Foundation, P.O. Box 412, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.
