We all called him Grandpa Lee as he lived with my family for a few years after his wife died, along with his son Claude. Lee was a fun loving, good man who loved burnt toast and cold oatmeal, oh so he would say as he ate it. He would never let mom give him warm cereal or fresh toast and he wouldn't eat until all of us kids had been fed breakfast though mom tried repeatedly to get him too. I remember how mom would make a fresh pan of oatmeal then call Lee upstairs, tell him it was extra, and she could then make delicious oatmeal cake with the left-over oatmeal. Grandpa Lee loved to do crossword puzzles, Find a Word books and to read. He watched "The Fugitive" show every week with my mother and any week I could squeeze in to watch it with them, I did also. He would take a car load of us kids out for the day in the Black Hills just for fun. He loved sharing his knowledge of where the back dirt work road was for building Mt. Rushmore. And because he lived with us, we got to know his wonderful family quite well as children. ------------------- Obituary: George Lee Skinner, 81, died Sunday at a Rapid City hospital. Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Behrens Mortuary. Burial will be at Scenic. Skinner was born at Beresford (Lincoln Co., South Dakota) on Aug. 6, 1896 to George and Ella Mae Skinner (Ellen Mary Lewis). In 1908, his family moved to Pennington County where they homesteaded north of Scenic. He married Johanna Mulloy at Rapid City in 1918 and they farmed on Kube Table. In 1924, they moved to Scenic and he was employed with Standard Oil. In 1935 they moved to Rapid City where he was employed with the State Highway Department until his retirement in 1963. Survivors include four sons, (George) Francis and Claude (James), both of Rapid City, (Sheldon) Leo of Newcastle, Wyoming and Bob (Robert Marvin) in Sturgis. 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Sept. 12, 1954, one sister (Clara E Pray), one brother (Caleb Sheldon Pray Jr.-Skinner) and one son (Merton Skinner).
