He had been residing at the Cumberland Nursing Home. A native of Mount Savage, he was a son of the late John Joseph Carney and Mary Ellen (Logsdon) Carney. His wife, Loretta Marie (Knieriem) Carney, died Sept. 14,1982. Mr. Carney was the retired owner and operator of Carney's Auto Parts for more than 50 years. He had been residing at the Cumberland Nursing Home. A native of Mount Savage, he was a son of the late John Joseph Carney and Mary Ellen (Logsdon) Carney. His wife, Loretta Marie (Knieriem) Carney, died Sept. 14,1982. Mr. Carney was the retired owner and operator of Carney's Auto Parts for more than 50 years. The business was located on North Mechanic Street. A member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Mr. Carney was a former member of the parish council, a life member of Cumberland Council 586, Knights of Columbus, Chief Justice Taney Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Cumberland BPO Elks Lodge 63 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 245. He also was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. Surviving are a son, George Leonard Carney Jr., LaVale; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Heyer Thomas, Beverly Hill, Fla., Mrs. Mary Ann Knight and Mrs. Loretta La Neve, both of Cumberland; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Third Order of St. Francis will recite the rosary Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The rosary will also be recited there at 7:30 p.m. Friday in conjunction with the K. of C., to be followed by an Elks memorial service at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Chief Justice Taney Fourth Degree will serve as honor guard." (Courtesy of Pat Dailey) ----
