Bellingham Herald, The (WA) - Monday, November 1, 2004 Jan. 14, 1923 to Oct. 28, 2004 George Lewis Cross, age 81 of Bellingham passed away at his home Friday, October 29, 2004. He was born January 14, 1923 in Tintah Village, Minnesota. George and family came to Bellingham in 1927. He attended Lowell, Columbia, Roeder, & Whatcom Schools. He graduated from Bellingham High School in January 1941. He worked at Boeing until joining the U.S. Army in January 1943. George served in the European Theater of WWII. He saw action in Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, the Ardennes, and Rhineland campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. He was honorably discharged for medical reasons in 1946. George came home and started in the automotive towing and repair business. Beginning in the Fountain District as Arden Wrecking, moving to Iowa Street and consolidating as B&B wrecking. Later, in 1958, he chose a career fishing the gillnetter F/V Ginny Sue for salmon in local and Alaskan waters. He retired from fishing in 1996. Bobbie, his wife of 24 years, survives George. A special son Paul Southland & wife Victoria of Wrangell, Alaska, step-children Brian Peterson & wife Sandi of Bellingham. Terri Peterson-Hatter & husband Michael of Alger, David Peterson & wife Nancy of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, sister Betty Texmo of Spokane and brother Russell & wife Sue of Lynden, eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. George was a quiet man to whom all were attached in different ways. But all had a love and wealth, by knowing him. His hobby were puttering, mending and listening. He had great knowledge of many of life's needs. George was a member of Bellingham Post #1585 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sumas Post #0212 American Legion, Bellingham Post #19 Disabled American Veterans and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1595 of Wrangell, Alaska. Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 1:30pm at Garden Street United Methodist Church, 1326 N. Garden St., Bellingham with Rev. William Green officiating. Memorials may be made to the Alpine Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 148, Malaga, Washington 98828 or Garden Street United Methodist Church, 1326 N.
