His mother was the daughter of wealthy planter and businessman, Col. Philomen Hawkins and his wife, Lucy Davis, and was raised on the family plantation "Pleasant Hill" in Warren County. George Little was prepared for college by an English tutor and entered the "Academy" in 1827, and graduated in 1830. He studied law in Raleigh, N. C., under the Hon. George E. Badger, afterwards Secretary of the Navy in the cabinets of Presidents Harrison and Tyler. After completing his legal studies, Mr. Little was admitted to the bar, but decided not to practice, as he preferred the quiet life of a planter to the contentions and strife of the court-room. This action was a surprise to his friends, as he gave promise of attaining distinction as a lawyer. On February 1, 1832, he married his first cousin, Margaret Craven Haywood, daughter of Stephen and Delia (Hawkins) Haywood. Seven (7) known children were born to them, including two sons. The elder of these, William Little, M. D., was an assistant surgeon in the Confederate Army, and after the war married Margaret Lane Mordecai, daughter of Henry Mordecai and Martha Hinton, and became a successful physician in Raleigh, where he died, leaving live sons. The younger son of Colonel Little, was George Little, Jr., who, when still a boy, served on the Confederate blockade-runner, "Advance". After the war he engaged in agricultural pursuits in Hertford County, and died there, leaving three daughters. George Little, Sr. moved to Raleigh after his marriage, and resided throughout the remainder of his life. He had inherited large tracts of land, with slaves sufficiently numerous to cultivate them, and he gave his time to the management of these estates and various business enterprises. He took an active part in the construction of the Raleigh and Weldon Railroad, and was a member of its board of directors for many years. He was also much interested in the State Militia, and served as an aide-de-camp, with the rank of Colonel, on the staff of Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight, from 1835 to 1837. He was United States Marshal during the administration of President Fillmore, and was offered the same position by President Lincoln, in 1861; but declined the appointment in consequence of the approach of the war between the states. He was an uncompromising Whig, and, like the vast majority of that party, was opposed to secession; but, after hostilities began, he sided with the South. Throughout the war he served as aide-decamp on the staff of Governor Vance. (Photo shown here.) Upon the downfall of the Confederacy, he accepted the situation without murmuring, and influenced others to follow his example. For several years after the war, he was engaged upon work in the Executive Office, and held the confidence of the Governor in all matters coming before him. For several years, he was president of a land company formed at Raleigh, for the purpose of inducing the better class of immigrants to locate in North Carolina. Col. George Little died in 1876 at age 66. His bride of 42 years remained a widow another 21 years, passing in 1897 at age 85. They are both buried in City Cemetery. Son, Dr. William Person Little (CSA) is buried in Oakwood Cemetery with his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Lane Mordecai.
