Description	:	George Loftus Helmstetter, 76, of RD 1, Box 33, Cash Valley Road, LaVale, Maryland, died Sunday, August 4, 1991, at the hospice unit of Sacred Heart Hospital. Born August 11, 1914 near Bendena, Kansas, he was the oldest child of the late Sebastian and Isabelle (Gray) Helmstetter. He was named after his two grandfathers, George Helmstetter and Loftus Gray. Born August 11, 1914 near Bendena, Kansas, he was the oldest child of the late Sebastian and Isabelle (Gray) Helmstetter. He was named after his two grandfathers, George Helmstetter and Loftus Gray. In 1921, his family moved to Effingham, Kansas when he was 7 years old, where he attended St. Ann's Parochial Grade School and Atchison County Community High School. George came to live with family in the Cumberland area as a young man to find work during the Depression. Mr. Helmstetter retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of SS. Peter's and Paul's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Secular Franciscan Order. Surviving are his widow, Agnes (Dressman) Helmstetter; one son, James G. Helmstetter, LaVale; one daughter, Mary Agnes Squires, LaVale; four brothers, Louis Helmstetter and Eugene Helmstetter, Atchison, Kansas; Bill Helmstetter, St. Joseph, MO; and Lawrence Helmstetter, El Cojon, Calif.; two sisters, Catherine Alfers, Nortonville, Kansas; and Margaret Saveleski, Annapolis, MD; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Thomas. Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at SS. Peter's and Paul Catholic Church by Fr. Stanley Miltenberger and Father Gary Stakem. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to the Ursuline Sisters Retirement Fund. Pallbearers will be John Helmstetter, Eugene Helmstetter, Clement Helmstetter, John Dressman, David Dressman, and James Mellozzi.
