His death was one of those sudden and calamitous strokes which appall, while they bring sorrow. On Tuesday morning Mr. Long was quite in his usual health and was cheerful, attending to his business with a sprightliness that gave no token of the impending evil. In the morning about 7 o’clock he went to market and returning home, eat his breakfast with a good appetite. Between 9 and 10 o’clock he went to the barber and was shaved, preserving in the meantime the same cheerful and happy spirit. About 11 o’clock the same morning he was taken suddenly with agonizing pains that were distressing to witness. Medical aid was at once summoned, and it was ascertained that he was afflicted with strangulation of the intestines. Every means was taken that medical surgical intelligence could supply, but his sufferings continued through the day and succeeding night, and through yesterday morning. Relief was partially afforded in the evening, but the physician gave no room to hope for his recovery. His sufferings where only terminated by death, which kindly came at the hour above stated. The deceased was a merchant of this city, extensively engaged in the baking and confectionery business, having a handsome trade and enjoying the confidence of the people. He was born in Ansfeld, near Hensfort, Bavaria, and came to this country in the year 1850 and settled at Wellersburg, Pa., where he remained a short while, and subsequently came to Allegany county. He had been a resident of Cumberland twenty-seven years at the time of his death. The deceased was noted for a liberal spirit and genial temperament, traits that won for him a host of friends, who loved him while living and will revere his memory. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul’s German Catholic church, and also a member of Sts. Peter and Paul’s and the German Union Beneficial Societies of this city. Mr. Long was in his 47th year, having been born on the 10th of March, 1832. He leaves a widow and seven children to mourn their irreparable loss. The funeral cortege will leave the residence on North Mechanic street at half-past nine o’clock tomorrow (Friday) morning, and the obsequies will take place at Sts. Peter and Paul church at 10 o’clock a.m. We extend to the sorrowing family our sincere condolence in this hour of their bereavement.
