Read More	OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - November 2, 1950 George Louis Martin, 61 years old, for many years one of the community's leading businessmen, died suddenly of a heart attack Wednesday afternoon at his farm on the Dora road east of here. Coroner L. W. Yoder reported death was due to coronary occlusion. Mr. Martin had visited the farm with a lumber buyer to inspect a stand of timber and was fatally stricken at this time. Only last February, Mr. Martin retired after having been active in the business life of the community for 45 years. He was born Oct 7, 1889, at Indianapolis the son of John Philip and Margaret (Hipskind) Martin, both of whom preceded him in death. In 1891 the family moved to Wabash, where he had lived ever since, residing at 225 West Maple street. Mr. Martin attended the local schools and began his employment in the banking business in 1905 with the First National bank. He later served with the Wabash County Loan and Trust company, then went with the Service Motor truck for a period. Subsequently he returned to the Farmers & Merchants National bank, and became cashier under the merger which formed the Farmers & Wabash National bank. When the bank moratorium occurred in the first Roosevelt administration, Mr. Martin was appointed as conservator of the bank and filled this position until Dec. 31, 1934. A few days later he became affiliated with the American Rock Wool corporation as the initial plant was established here, and became the treasurer in 1936. Mr. Martin was active also in religious and civic affairs of the community. He retired as treasurer of the Red Cross chapter last April after having filled the position for many years. Mr. Martin was extremely active in St. Bernard's Catholic church and was a parish councilman for 30 years, during which period he worked with Father Ley in forming the present school. He was at this time a member of the committee for the building program in progress at St. Bernard's. He also was active in the Holy society and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. On June 8, 1911, he was married to Rosa Mary Brashan at Weyburn, Can. She survives with the following children, Sister M. Floretta, Bend, Ore.; Sister Marueen, Tipton; John L. Martin, Robert Martin, Mrs. Richard Miller, William Martin, and Mrs. Patrick Weber, all of this city. One daughter, Mrs. August Rumpf, preceded him in death. Two sisters, Mrs. Rec Talmage, Oregon city, and Mrs. Charles Hartley, Medford, Ore., also survive as well as four granddaughters. The body was taken to the Jones funeral home and was returned to the family residence Thursday afternoon where friends may call. The Rosary service will be held in the residence at 7:30 o'clock Friday evening. Funeral services will be held in St. Bernard's church at 9 o'clock Saturday forenoon with Father Leo A. Hoffmann officiating and burial will be in Falls cemetery.
