Laney, the treasurer of Union county, died at his home a mile east of town at one o'clock Sunday. Much less than a week before he was well and had no thought of death save that which occurs to men on ordinary occasions. Death came from blood poisoning, the infection being taken in on the upper lip. Monday night Mr. Laney noticed a little pimple on the left side of his lip, but paid no attention to it. On Tuesday he remarked that he had scratched the place and was afraid that it might be sore. On Wednesday he went to his farm in Buford and Thursday he spent at the court house, walking home late Thursday afternoon. The place had by that time began to get very painful and to swell, and on Friday a physician was summoned. The trouble had begun to develop rapidly and fast became alarming. Sunday morning the lip and face had swollen fearfully, the pain was agonizing, and it appeared that death was imminent. Though suffering intensely, Mr. Laney remained conscious till a few minutes before death and spoke to the friends who called. The funeral was held on Monday morning by Rev. Mr. Brinkman, and the body was buried at the homeplace in Buford township, only a couple of hundred yards from the house where the deceased had lived many years. The service was attended by a very large crowd. The pall bearers were Messrs. W. S. Lee, D. A. Houston, J. E. Stewart, T. C. Lee, Davis Armfield and W. J. Hudson. The deceased was 54 years of age. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Ida Dillon, and by seven children, Messrs. J. W., Luther, Clayton, Ward and Thomas Laney, and Mrs. Lee Byrd and Miss Cornelia Laney. He was one of the best of men. He was a faithful member of Trinity Methodist church and for years was the superintendent of the Sunday school. He was pleasant in manner, always had a smile, and gained the confidence of everybody. He was always quiet, good humored, fair and honest in all his dealings, and could be counted on the right side always. He was elected county treasurer last fall and was filling the office carefully and satisfactorily till his untimely death. In December last he moved with his family from the old home in Buford township to the Moore place, a mile east of town. He had made friends rapidly all over the county and his death is not only a sad shock to his family, but a source of regret to people all over the county.
