My mother, the former Augusta Amundsen, was a native of Urskog, Norway and came to this country at the age of 19. She lived in Granite Falls, Minn. My mother, the former Augusta Amundsen, was a native of Urskog, Norway and came to this country at the age of 19. She lived in Granite Falls, Minn. They were married in 1905 and moved to farm near Soldier. A year later they moved to my grandfathers's farm northeast of Soldier. Their five children: Arnold, Marvin, George, Ruby and Helen were born there. During World War I my father bought artillery horses and mules for the allied forces and after the war bought large horses for the logging industry in Upper Michigan. In 1924 he became a partner in the Britton and Johnson firm buying hogs for the eastern markets, and a few years later he engaged in the grain and elevator business. In March 1927 he sent 8 carloads of stock from the Soldier yards to Sioux City, the largest single shipment ever made from Soldier. Hogs sold at $11.00 per hundred. The partnership was dissolved in 1941 and Martin bought the elevator. He retired in 1947 and sold the business to his son Arnold, and partner, Lawrence Major. They did over one million dollars worth of business in 1948/ They paid $30.00 for hogs, $2.65 for corn and $1.42 for oats. In 1953, Arnold became sole owner and operator until 1971 when he sold out to David Gorham. My parents spent 65 years together, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1955. Father died at age 87 and mother was 94. Brother ARNOLD BRITTON was the first manager of the Co-op station in Soldier. He was Secretary of the telephone company and the Lutheran church in soldier. He and the former Florence Gardner are the parent of five children: Clarold, John, William, Marcia and Barbara. After Florence's death, he married EVELYN SHEA and made their home in Soldier until retiring in Sun City, Calif. Marvin and his wife, the former Merle Mortensen, farmed dad's farm until retiring to Ute in 1974. Their children are: Patricia, Ardyce, Robert and Gary. Marvin died in 1976. GEORGE and MILDRED ULVEN were married and lived in Soldier where he operated the Co-op station until he became manager of Green Bay Lumber Co. and later transferred to Battle Creek and Denison. They later moved to Martelle, IA where he retired. Their children are: Karen, Kristine, George Jr., and Teddy. Teddy died at the age of 3. RUBY, an R.N. married HARRY L. NELSON and moved to Chicago, Ill. Their children are: Rolland, Carma and Harry Jr. Harry died in 1970. After graduating from High School, I was employed by Soldier Valley Savings Bank. I married Herbert Mordhorst of Ute, IA. and we farmed for 32 years. We retired to Ute where Herb operated the hardware, plumbing and heating business until 1974. We have three children: Duane, Jerome and Marilyn and eleven grandchildren.
