Added to Ancestry.com, 17 Jan 2008 by YvonneAmidon59: George Melvin O'Dell was born on a farm five miles north of Lisco to John Leonard O'Dell and Mamie (Dolson) O'Dell in 1912. They then moved to a new farm about six miles east where he attended District 66 School and, later, Garden County High School. He worked for several farmers and married Virginia Johnson in 1938. To this couple a son was born in 1947. George's wife and son died in an accident on the farm. Melvin (as he was called) had left to work in the field early that morning. Later, Virginia was cold in the house, so she tried to start a fire in the heating stove. It didn't start right away and she thinking the fire had gone out poured some fuel oil on the papers in the stove. It exploded catching her and the infant son, standing beside her, on fire. Virginia tried to put the fire out on her son, but he was very badly burned. She, too, had severe burns over most of her body. She put her son in the car and drove to field where Melvin was working. As she approached the field she continued to honk the horn in the car. Melvin knew there must be something wrong and came to the car. All rescue attempts to save both Virginia and the son were in vein and they died later that day. The son was only 18 months old. They were both buried together in one coffin. In 1948, Melvin moved to Reno, Nevada and on October 18, 1948, he married Nellie Mickley. Melvin Later worked for Lockheed Aircraft in Palmdale, California for 25 years. He retired and moved to Grace Mouth, Oklahoma. While there, he purchased a restaurant which they operated until Nellie's health failed and they moved to Joplin, Missouri, where she later passed away. Melvin moved to Sidney in 1983 and lived there until he broke a hip and then moved to the Sidney Nursing Center in 1996 until he passed away.
