Merv was born in Decatur County, IA, son of Clint and Eleanor Ivins. At the age of five, the family relocated to Peshastin and settled in Derby Canyon. Merv attended school in Peshastin and graduated in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951, and served in Korea and Japan. After his discharge, he moved to California, where he attended Electrical Lineman's school. He was employed by Edison Power Company for five years. He returned to Peshastin in 1964, with his two children, Chris and Melanie, where he was employed by Chelan County P.U.D. Merv was united in marriage to Jody Hendricks in April 1966, and became father to her four children. The family resided in Peshastin, and in 1967, their son, Mark was born. The family moved to Vashon Island in 1969, where he was employed by Puget Power. When the older children finished school and left home, the family moved to Cashmere, where he worked for both Chelan and Douglas County PUDs. He retired in 1995, after serving 40 years as a lineman and foreman. Merv was a member of the IBEW Union and Cashmere American Legion. He served as Commander and both he and Jody managed Legion Bingo for many years. Merv was a committed family man and coached Little League baseball, both in Peshastin and Cashmere. The family traveled to tournaments with the team and he spearheaded fund-raisers for uniforms and equipment. Merv was a loving and devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved following the Mariners. He and Jody made many trips to Reno with their friends, Keith and Ellen Rovang. They also made several trips to Alaska to visit children and grandchildren. Merv will surely be remembered by all who knew him as a "Big Man" with a "BIG HEART" - always ready to help those in need.George is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jody; sons, Chris Ivins (Ellie), Mark Ivins (Lisa), Kenneth Hendricks (Kathy) and Robert Hendricks; his step-son, David Adams (Becky); daughters, Robin Eleazer (Jim), Melanie Doyle (Tony) and Becky Harris (Jim); grandchildren, Ashley and Christopher Ivins, Jarrett Lister, Kelly, Kristen and Kari Hendricks, Joe and Mathew Bates, Cody and Mychele Doyle, Jon Hendricks, Jay and Tori Ivins and Joshua and Jared Adams; four great-grandsons; a special sister-in-law, Jewell LaVigne; brother, Marvin "Rex" Ivins; and sister, Ree Ware. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John; and four grandchildren.Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the Peshastin United Church of Christ, in Peshastin, at 2:00 p.m. The service will conclude at the church.
