Description	:	Abbeville Press and Banner (Abbeville, SC) of 10/30/1917 Mr. George M. Smith died in Atlanta Monday morning, October 29 at 11:30, in the seventy-first year of his age. Mr. Smith was in Atlanta on a visit to kindred and at the time of his death was at the home of his niece, Mrs. Mamie Thomson. He had not been well for some time but his kindred in Abbeville did not know of his serious illness until an hour before news came of his death. George M. Smith died in Atlanta Monday morning, October 29 at 11:30, in the seventy-first year of his age. Mr. Smith was in Atlanta on a visit to kindred and at the time of his death was at the home of his niece, Mrs. Mamie Thomson. He had not been well for some time but his kindred in Abbeville did not know of his serious illness until an hour before news came of his death. George M. Smith was a son of Joel Smith, of Stoney Point, and his wife, Isabella Marshall Smith. He was born and reared at the Smith home at Stoney Point. At the breaking out of the war, he was a cadet at the Citadel and went from there to the war, serving for four years in the army in Virginia. At the close of the war he went west and settled in Arkansas. He was engaged in the business of a planter there for sixteen or eighteen years, when he returned to South Carolina and engaged in the mercantile business, first a Latimer and then at Calhoun Falls, S.C. Some years ago he retired from the business and since then he has made his home in Abbeville. He was never married. Mr. Smith is survived by two sisters, Mrs. O. F. Simpson and Mrs. J. A. Bowie of Atlanta, and by many kinsfolk in Abbeville, among them his nephews, Mr. J. Allen Smith and Mr. A. M. Smith. His nephew, A.M. Smith and his grandnephew, Joel S. Morse left for Atlanta immediately upon receiving news of his death. They will return today to Greenwood and the funeral will be held at that place at eleven oclock. His friends over the county who loved him so well will be grieved to hear of his death.
