George Norwood Proctor was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, March 7,1835, and died at his residence in Washington township, Clarke county, Iowa, November 11,1897, aged sixty-two years, eight months and four days. In 1861 he immigrated to this state, making his home in Warren county. August 11, 1862, he enlisted in Co. B, 31th Regiment Iowa Volunteers. At the battle of Arkansas Post, January 11, 1863, he received a bullet through his lung, which was never removed. He was borne from the field, suppos'd to be mortally wounded, but rallying sufficiently he was discharged, and returned to his home. In after years the bullet caused him much trouble, working downward through his body until it could be easily felt in his groin. While other disabilities were operating against him, physically, yet without doubt the unextracted Confederate bullet was the cause of his death December 10, 1883, having moved to Clarke county he joined to Osceola G. A R. Post and was ever an active and interested comrade in all that pertained to the welfare of his brethren in arms. Several of his Post comrades were present at the battle where he was wounded and assisted in carrying him from the field. He was married October 6, 1864, to Rebecca Underwood. He leaves a widow and five children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and a loving father. As a citizen, he was respected and honored by all his acquaintances. Five years ago he united with the Methodist Protestant church at Pleasant Ridge, and has lived a conscientious Christian life. Previous to his death, he made all preliminary arrangements for his funeral, requesting that the Osceola Post G. A. R. should conduct the services, also selected the one he desired should preach the sermon. When asked if he was willing to go, he replied, "Yes, all is well" Then bidding his loved ones good-bye, his spirit was borne away to the Great Encampment where veterans in the army of the Lord will never require pensions, but wearing the uniform of Heaven, will keep step to music prepared for the triumphal march in the Grand Review. The funeral services were conducted according to his request. The services were held at Pleasant Ridge at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, The sermon was preached from Dan. IV, 17, by Rev. Follansbee. He was assisted in the services by Rev. Lockwood, chaplain of the G.A.R. Post, and Rev. G. W. Robinson. A very large congregation assembled, hundreds being unable to procure even standing room within the church. W. H. Ridgway states that in over thirty years' experience as undertaker he never had so long a funeral procession. Ono hundred twenty-nine teams were in attendance. Probably fifty of those were from Osceola. The remains were escorted to the cemetery by the G. A. R. comrades and Sons of Veterans, led by the martial band. At the grave the burial services were read, and all that was mortal of the old battle-scarred comrade, husband, father and friend was placed to rest to await the orders from the Great Captain. At the conclusion of the address to the members of the G. A. R., Rev Follansbee used the following language "Veteran Proctor! life's warfare is now o'er, The martial bugle sounds for you no more: Attention, comrades with uncovered head, I read lightly as you salute your honored dead. Not with the honors as on earth are given— He is crowned with glory in the Camp of heaven."
