His age was 107 years, eight months and ten days. Not only did Mr. Manro live to an age more than twice that of the average man, but he retained a remarkable clearness of mind until a few days ago. For years he had been crippled because of two strokes of paralysis, but his intellect appeared not to have been affected by age of bodily affliction. Was Born in Scotland George P. Manro was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on December 24, 1808. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Manro. At the age of six years, he accompanied his parents to Kings County, Ireland, where the family subsequently lived. He came to Canada about the year 1863, and a year later, just before the close of the War between the State, came to Cleveland, Ohio. He then moved to Virginia, and on December 26, 1867, married Miss Sarah D. Wood, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Wood, at Flint Hill, Rappahannock County. She was a native of Page County. Mr. Manro was for many years foreman at the Belmont Vinery at Front Royal, and has numerous acquaintances in Page and Warren counties. Mrs. Manro died eighteen years ago, and two years later, Mr. Manro and his daughter, Miss Ella Manro, moved to Harrisonburg, where they have since resided on North Main Street. His daughter is his only living relative. 90 Years Old When He Came Here Although more than ninety years old, when he came to Harrisonburg, Mr. Manro was able to take care of his garden until a year or two ago. Despite his suffering from the infirmities of age for many months, Mr. Manro was confined to his room less than a week. He took his meals in the dining room with his daughter until last Wednesday, but since that day has been unable to leave his bed. Mr. Manro had been a faithful member of the Catholic Church for many years, and at the time of his death was a communicant of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Harrisonburg. He was also a member of the League of the Sacred Heart, and took an active interest in religious affairs. He was sexton of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament until compelled by his advance age to give up the work. Mr. Manro had lived as simply as a child, and his death was in keeping with what his life had been. He fell into a natural sleep which merged easily into that deeper slumber from which no many awakes in this world. The funeral services will take place at 9:30 o'clock tomorrow morning from the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Father Edward S. Brosnan, of Staunton, officiating. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery. Those who will serve as pallbearers are Patrick J. Reilly, P. J. Lamb, Sr., Christian Weinman, James M. Kavanaugh, Thomas L. Manning and John Kavanaugh. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Christmas Eve, 1808. He lived with his parents in Ireland for fifty years and came to Canada in 1863, going to Cleveland, Ohio at the close of the war. He then came of Virginia. On the day after Christmas, 1867, he married Miss Sarah D. Wood, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent J. Wood, of Flint Hill, Rappahannock County. She was a native of Page County, and died eighteen years ago. For years Mr. Manro was foreman of Belmont Vinery, at Front Royal, and was well-known in Northern Virginia. He came to Harrisonburg in 1899. He worked his garden until two years ago and served as sexton of the Catholic Church until he was past the century mark. He belonged to the Catholic Church and was also a member of the League of the Sacred Heart. Though crippled and weakened. Mr Manro's mind was clear and active up to last Friday. Untl1 last Wednesday he walked to the dining-room and ate his meals with his daughter, Miss Ella Manro, his only living relative. Mr. Manro often remarked that he was born just a few months before Gladstone, Abraham Lincoln, Edgar Allan Poe and other world-famous men.
