He was one of four children born of German and Irish Descent to Dr. Jacob Jasper Ikirt and his wife Elizabeth Crowe Fife Ikirt, near West Beaver Church, in Columbiana, Ohio. He was educated at local common public schools in New Lisbon, Ohio, and taught school and studied law under Jonathan H. Wells, but on account of his bad health, he was compelled to abandon both. He was educated at local common public schools in New Lisbon, Ohio, and taught school and studied law under Jonathan H. Wells, but on account of his bad health, he was compelled to abandon both. On May 20, 1873, he married Mary L. Hasson in Columbiana, Ohio, and they would have a son together. His wife Mary sadly passed away on April 29, 1876, at the age of 24. He then attended the prestigious Columbus Medical School in Columbus, Ohio, before relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he studied at the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery in 1877, and then went on to practice medicine for five years. During this time he married for the second time to Mary Ellen Holmes in about February of 1880 in East Liverpool, Ohio, and the couple would have seven children together. He then relocated to New York City in 1882, and the following year he graduated from the Bellevue Hospital Medical College. He then returned to East Liverpool, Ohio, and resumed his medical practice for a few years. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress but was an unsuccessful Candidate for election to the Fifty-Fifth Congress in 1888. He did, however, run again a few years later and this time he won and was elected to represent the Fifty-First Congress. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served Ohio's 18th District (Fifty-First Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from 1893 to 1895. He declined to be a Candidate for renomination in 1884. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1895, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Robert Walker Tayler. He then again returned to East Liverpool, Ohio, and resumed his medical practice until his death. By the time he had died, he was in the medical profession for 54 years. He passed away from sudden heart at his home on the corner of West Sixth and Jackson Street in East Liverpool, Ohio, on February 12, 1927, at the age of 74. He was buried beside his wife Mary in the Riverview Cemetery in East Liverpool, Ohio. He had not been in good health since the passing of his wife two years before from a fatal heart attack. His great-grandfather was Dr. George Ikirt who had served in the War of 1812 as one of future President Andrew Jackson's scouts.
