SAXON BURIED SUNDAY Funeral services for George P. Saxon, 72, resident of Dixon County for 40 years, were held Sunday afternoon. Mr. Saxon passed away at his home Friday, May 24th. Rev George Bray conducted services at the home and from the Presbyterian church in Ponca. Rites at the grave were in charge of the Ponca Masonic lodge. Interment was made in Silver Ridge cemetery, under direction of Mohr's Mortuary. The following obituary was read at the church service, by Rev. Bray: George Platt Saxon, was born at Preemption, Ill., June 15th, 1867. During his youth his father moved his family to Moorefield, Neb., where he filed on a homestead and builded a house. When George was twenty-four years old his father died, leaving the responsibility of the farm to him and his younger brothers. Years of drought and resultant crop failures were discouraging, and hearing glowing accounts of Dixon county, through a friend, he came to Newcastle in 1900. Several busy, happy years followed; then at the urgent request of his mother, married brothers, and sisters, he returned to the maternal home. However the lure of Dixon county was upon him and the spring of 1906 found him again in Newcastle. He purchased a farm, and there has made his home; with the exception of a few years he lived in Montana. June 12th, 1906, he was married to Rosalie Price. To this union four sons were born, George Everett, of Sheldon, Ia., Merle Eldon, and Clifford, both of Ponca, and Paul Buell who preceded him in death. He was baptized in infancy in the Presbyterian church, and believed in "what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with they God." He was a member of the Masonic lodge. For many years he was an asthmatic, but never allowed his affliction to prevent him from helping a neighbor, or any person in need. May 24, 1940 he succumbed in peaceful sleep leaving to mourn his absence, his wife, three sons, five grandchildren, his brother Charles, of Wyoming, Ia., and other relatives and many friends. He was 72.
