Description	:	Close of a Busy Life George S. Baker, who departed this life March 4, was born February 9, 1839, near Lima, Ill., where his boyhood was spent. When 14 years old he removed with his parents to Warsaw, Ill., where he lived until the breaking out of the civil war in 1861, at which time he entered the service as engineer of a gunboat in Farragut's fleet. Read More	Close of a Busy Life George S. Baker, who departed this life March 4, was born February 9, 1839, near Lima, Ill., where his boyhood was spent. When 14 years old he removed with his parents to Warsaw, Ill., where he lived until the breaking out of the civil war in 1861, at which time he entered the service as engineer of a gunboat in Farragut's fleet. He ran the batteries during the siege of Vicksburg and was present at the surrender, July 4, 1863. After the war, he was a railroad conductor for 10 years, and captain of a river steamer for several years. In 1869 he was married to Jennie Miller, with whom he lived a happy life. The family came to Colfax a little over 10 years ago, engaging in farming until about a year ago, when, owing to Mr. Baker's failing health, it became necessary to move to town to be in easy reach of medical aid. A hard battle for departing health was fought but to no avail. These survive him the wife and only child, George M. Baker, and four brothers, one of whom is Thos. Baker of Colfax. Colfax Gazette, 14 Mar 1902 ===== George Baker Dead George S. Baker died March 4 at his home in Colfax, aged 63 years. He was a brother of Thos. Baker and for many years a resident of this city. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the M.E.
