This community was startled on Wednesday morning last by the announcement that Geo. S. Beer was dead, having died the night before after less than a half hour's illness. Upon inquiry we learned that he was about his work as usual on Tuesday, at his supper and was about to retire for the night when he was seized with a fit of coughing and sank down to die. Mr. Beer was one of our oldest and highly esteemed citizens. He was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, September 13th, 1812; came to Jefferson county, Iowa, in 1857, moved to Pleasant township, Appanoose county, in 1861 and thence to his late home in Franklin township in 1864. He was twice married. He was laid beside his late wife in Franklin cemetery on Thursday morning. The funeral was conducted by Elder Shepard. A large company of neighbors and sympathizing friends were present. The Centerville Citizen, Centerville, Iowa, Wednesday, July 6, 1887, page 2 DIED. - At Livingston Iowa, June 28th, 1887, George S. Beer, aged 74 years, 9 months and 15 days. Deceased was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, Sept. 13th, 1812. Was married to Catherine Jackson, Jan. 8th, 1835, who died July 18th, 1845. Married to Priscilla Garbsy Oct. 30, 1845, who died March 3, 1871. Moved to Jefferson county, Iowa in 1857, and to this county in 1861; and to the farm where he died in 1864. Uncle George had been in his usual health the day of his death, and had been mowing weeds around the yard. He rocked his little grandson, aged about three years, to sleep in the evening and carried him up stairs to bed, when he was taken with a coughing spell, and in twenty minutes was a corpse.
