Coffey Mr. Geo. S. Coffey, aged 64 years, a respected citizen living a few miles west of Dardanelle on Route 4, died at Mary’s Hospital in Russellville at 11:10 o’clock on Wednesday night of last week from injuries sustained a few hours earlier. At the time of the fatal accident, Mr. Coffey was assisting in digging a well at the home of his son, Lester Coffey. The well had reached a considerable depth and Mr. Coffey, who was doing the digging, had filled a bucket with rock and earth taken from the well. This was being drawn to the surface with a windlass when the chain to which the bucket was attached broke, dropping the heavy load onto Mr. Coffey’s head. The injured man was hurriedly removed from the well, and rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Russellville, but his injuries were of such a nature that surgical skill was of no avail. The funeral services were held at the family home last Thursday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. Nichols, Burial was made in New Hope Cemetery. Mr. Coffey was a native of Tennessee, but came to Yell County when but a lad of 17 years. He was an honorable, upright man, industrious, kindly and just in all of his dealings with his fellows and his death is a great and grievous loss not only to the members of his family but to the entire community.
