The Late Geo. Scott A Nobel Military Figure Laid to His Rest A noble figure in the Edwell and Red Deer districts passed away on February 17 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Lawson, R. R. 1, Penhold, in the person of Mr. Geo. Scott in his 73rd year. Mr. Scott was born in Auchterarder County, Perthshire, Scotland, on September 1, 1856 [1855]. He enlisted at the age of twenty years at Stirling in the Royal Field Artillery and rose to the rank of staff farrier-sergeant. He served abroad, mostly in India, for ten years and was discharged from Woolwich in 1894, leaving for Canada where he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery at Kingston, Ont. and served with that force for several years. He had the honor of gaining the long service and good conduct medals in the old country. He was a Royal Arch Mason of the Indian Order, with Northern Star. Mr. Scott came to Red Deer district in 1898, homesteading east of Red Deer. He lost Mrs. Scott in 1902. He leaves to mourn his loss three daughters and two sons--Mrs. G. Ford, Red Deer; Mrs. Fred Lawson, Penhold; Mrs. Paul McInroy, Red Deer; Gilbert Scott and George Scott, Edwell. He leaves one brother in Scotland. A soldier friend pays him the following tribute: "His cheerful disposition and kindly ways made him many real friends, and he will be greatly missed by us all. He was a man of sterling qualities, and was deeply loyal to King and country. He had a most wonderful memory, and could call up important events in history of fifty years ago, as well as many incidents of his military life. His heart was in proportion to his size. He was ever ready to assist anyone in need, irrespective of race or creed. A man was a man for what he did; deeds only counted with him." He was the oldest soldier on the membership of the roll of the British Empire Service Legion, Red Deer Post. The funeral on Thursday was a full military one, the pallbearers being all officers of the Alberta Military Institute, Red Deer, and Capt. J. S. Orton, Innisfail, conducted the service, and the body was interred in the Red Deer cemetery. Besides floral remembrances from the family and friends, there were wreaths from the Masonic Order, the Alberta Military Institute, Headquarters staff, 20th Field Brigade, C.A.; officers and N.C.O.'s 78th Field Battery, C.A., Red Deer; B.E.S. Legion, Red Deer Post.
