In the territorial days many of the German Colonists from the Great Ukraine, South Russia, settled in the '70's and '80's of the last century, before the Dakota Territory became two separate states, in the southeast corner of South Dakota, around Menno, Scottland, Vermillion, Tyndall and Yankton. Most of them were engaged in farming. Cattle raising in a small way, as most of them had done in the old country, was a sideline with them. The majority of the early settlers of the great Northwest came from countries where cattle raising was not a general practice, as later on in our western and southern ranches. Although some localities of practically every European country were adopted and used exclusively for cattle and sheep raising. Among the German Russian colonists, there were a few who had a sizable sheep and cattle ranches in the old country, especially along the mighty Volga. There were a number of these colonists who owned them by name, had nearly a million head of sheep, and in 1894 sold his wool crop of the year for 750,000 Rubels. When the German Russian colonists left the land of the Czars many settled in Kansas, and later on in Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Texas, Canada and several countries of South America. South Dakota was only one year old as a separate state when Bonaventure Stolz, father to George Stoltz, set foot on its soil. The family came to Yankton, South Dakota, in 1890, where his father worked for a few years as a laborer. He was a native of the German colony of Landau, Ukraine, South Russia, founded in 1809 in Beresian Valley, between the Rivers Bug and Dniester, some 110 miles west of Kherson, the capital of the state by the same name, and 115 miles northwest of Odessa, the great seaport on the Black Sea. In that valley were a number of large colonies and many Hutors or small villages. His maternal grandfather, Christian Stolz, was a professional blacksmith. His maternal grandparents were George and Elizabeth Hench-Heilman. His paternal grandparents, Joseph and Elizabeth Senn-Stolz, were natives of Hassel, Rheinpfalz, Germany, and came to Landau, South Russia, in the beginning of the 19th century and were co-founders of the colony. The name Stolz became in the course of time, well-known in Landau, since a number of men by that name were music teachers and organists in the colony. The father of Mr. George Stoltz, Bonaventure Stolz, was born July 14, 1855, and his mother, Elizabeth Heilman, March 7, 1855. Besides his brother Sebastian, born July 18, 1896, he had three half-brothers and two half-sisters. His father first married to Miss Erhmantraut, who died within a year, and left him with one daughter, Regina, who was then raised by her grandparents. Sometime later he married Miss Magdalene Hutmacher, with whom he left Russia for the United States, after the birth of their two sons: Emmanuel and Phillip. Three years later Mrs. Bonaventure Stolz, by that time they had two more children: Jacob and Catherine. Being left with four small children, Mr. Bonaventure Stolz left Ashley, North Dakota. On October 8, 1895 he entered marriage at Eureka, South Dakota, with the widow, Elizabeth Heilman, daughter of George and Elizabeth Hench-Heilman, who had two daughters: Marian and Catherine, the later the wife of Anton Wolf. For sometime they made their homestead of his wife near Ashley. On that homestead was born Mr. George Stoltz and his brother, Sebastian. Early in 1898, Mr. and Mrs. Bonaventure Stolz gave up their homestead three miles west of their homestead near Ashley and took up a homestead three miles west of Hosmer, South Dakota, where they made their home until 1909. By that time they had acquired another two quarter sections of land. Those three quarter sections they sold then and bought 720 acres, twelve miles southeast of Dickinson, North Dakota, at $25.00 an acre. In the fall of the year the family arrived at Dickinson, North Dakota with three carloads of horses, farm machinery and household goods. On the new place Mr. Bonaventure Stolz farmed and ranched with his boys until 1922, when he turned the farm over to his son, Sebastian and retired at Dickinson, North Dakota. On July 30, 1928, Mr. Bonaventure Stolz passed away and was laid to rest in St. Thomas Cemetery, Gladstone, North Dakota. His wife followed him in death February 14, 1931, and was interred beside him. Although born in North Dakota, Mr. George Stoltz spent his childhood years in South Dakota, where he received his formal rural elementary education. Raised on the farm he received under the guidance and direction of his father, his education in the farming industry and cattle raising, that came him in good stead in later years. On November 4, 1919, he entered marriage at St. Joseph's Church, Dickinson, North Dakota, with Miss Perpetua Klein, born February 4, 1899, at Dickinson, North Dakota, daughter of Peter Klein, born March 25, 1866, and Catherine Froehlich, June 24, 1868. The marriage ceremony was performed by Father George P. Arberle and the witnesses were Messrs. George and Frank Krank. The paternal grandparents of Mrs. George Stoltz were Peter and Elizabeth Dillman-Klein and her maternal grandparents, Jacob and Sophie Andres-Froehlich. Her paternal great grandparents, George and Elizabeth Hermann-Klein, came to Katherinental in the beginning of the 19th century from Kirchhard, Baden, Germany. The Peter Klein family came to the United States in the fall of 1891 and settled for four years south of Richardton, North Dakota. Thereafter they homesteaded some five miles south of Dickinson, North Dakota, where they made their permanent home. Later on part of their land was bought for the Dickinson Airport. Their family was blessed with five children: Jacob, born May 8, 1894; Peter, November 25, 1895; Paul, July 23, 1897; Perpetua, and the oldest children Leo (1890) and Anna (1892) died in infancy, Mr. Peter Klein passed away during the flu epidemic, October 18, 1918, and his wife on October 14, 1937. Both were laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. George Stoltz made their home for one year with his parents. In 1921 they bought one quarter section of land with the buildings, the former homestead of Adam Wilhelm, eight miles southeast of Dickinson, North Dakota. This became their permanent home on the farm. In the course of time they increased their landholdings to seven quarter sections. Mr. George Stoltz was a great lover of horses and thus made use of them in his farm operation until 1937, when he bought his first tractor. The tractor revolutionized the farm operation. It looked costly in the beginning, but no farmer would want to go back again to the old gangplow with four or five horses. Furthermore one good tractor does today the work of sixteen horses to twenty horses. The horses had to be fed or pastured all year around, while the tractor uses gas and oil when it is at work. Most farmers can keep fifteen to twenty cows in their pasture, nowadays, formerly used for horses, and thus can make as much or more money by the use of the tractor. Since beef is in more demand then ever before, most farmers decreased their small grain acreage and run more cattle on their farm. And thus where Mr. George Stolz used to have some forty or fifty head of cattle before he increased his herd later on to some 100 head. The union of Mr. and Mrs. George Stoltz was blessed with eight children: Florian, born December 18, 1920; Mary Magdalene, April 26, 1922, wife of Nelson S. Anderson; Emelia, September 28, 1924, wife of Fred Armbrust; Peter, April 28, 1928; Leo, July 2, 1931; George, December 18, 1935, drowned on June 22, 1952; and two died in infancy, Joseph (June 1 1923 – June 5, 1923). To all of their children they gave a good rural and parochial elementary education and fine Christian training. After farming and ranching for 36 years Mr. and Mrs. George Stoltz retired in the fall of 1955 at Dickinson, North Dakota and then sold the farm to their oldest son, Leo. Mrs. George Stoltz was ailing sometime and on December 29, 1959, she passed away and was laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson, North Dakota. On July 16, 1960, Mr. Stoltz married the widow of the Late Alex Roller, Philomena, nee Pachl. Politically Mr. and Mrs. George Stoltz were Republicans. Socially they were affiliated with the German-Hungarian Society. Religiously they were lifelong faithful members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, North Dakota.
