Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church here with burial in Lawn Ridge Cemetery and military honors by American Legion Post 114. Hefner, 81, of Coleridge died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at Fremont Area Medical Center. George was born on Oct. 27, 1930, at Hartington to George P. and Alvina M. (Bartling) Hefner. He grew up and lived in Coleridge all of his life. George graduated from Coleridge High School in 1948. He married Kay Hansen on Dec. 17, 1951, at Coleridge. George served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and then returned to Coleridge, where he owned and operated Hefner Oil and Feed with his brothers, Elroy and Gerhardt. His son Kerry joined the business in 1975. He also was co-owner of the Truck Haven Truck Stop in Sioux City, Iowa, and served as a substitute rural mail carrier for about 20 years. George was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge and served on the church council. He was a member of the Coleridge American Legion Post 114, Hartington VFW Post 5283 and the Coleridge Industrial Development Corporation. He was a member of the Coleridge Volunteer Fire Department from 1954 to 1995, serving as chief for 17 years. He was a Coleridge Community Club member and former president, former Coleridge Community School Board member and former president, former member of the Coleridge National Bank Board of Directors, former member of the Coleridge Village Board and was active in the Tri County Amateur Baseball League. George was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan and enjoyed all sports. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. George is survived by his wife, Kay of Coleridge; four children, Charlotte and Rod Hall, George R. Hefner, Kerry and Janice Hefner, all of Coleridge, Joan and Greg Thies of Randolph; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Elroy and Carol Hefner of Coleridge; and a sister, Delores and Wendell Hahne of Norfolk. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Becky Hefner; and five brothers, Wilfred, Marvin, Gerhardt, Wendel and Franklin Hefner. Pallbearers will be George’s grandchildren, Jeff Hall, Jeremy Hall, Jay Hall, Amanda Hefner, Ben Hefner, Molly Hefner, Shelly Hefner, Jon Hefner, Kenny Thies, Michelle Meyer, Matthew Thies and Tony Thies.
