March 15, 1962 - Newell Mirror - Last rites were held for George W. Boyce, 83, at the First Congregational church in Newell on Saturday, March 10. Reverend G.W. Reinmuth was in charge of the service with Baak Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Marvel Olsen furnished the music accompanied by Mrs Orville Rogers. Mrs Glenn Baughman, Mrs C.R. Interment was in Newell Cemetery. George W Boyce was born at Rockford, Illinois, August 23, 1878 to Mortimer D. and Helen Brewster Boyce. At the age of 2 years his family came to Iowa and settled on a farm 4 miles southwest of Newell in Providence township. There he received his early education. He later attended Buena Vista college and Iowa State University at Ames. For several years he taught school in this vicinity. He became a member of the First Congregational church of Newell in 1899 and has been a faithful member of it these many years, serving it as a deacon and in other capacities. January 29, 1909 he was united in marriage to Anna Jensen at her home in Ida Grove. They began their married life on a farm southwest of Newell and several years later lived on the farm purchased on the edge of Newell. Mr Boyce's interest was in raising purebred livestock. During these years he was active in farm organizations. Mr and Mrs Boyce later retired to a residence in Newell where Mrs Boyce died in 1953. The past few months he has resided at Methodist Manor, Storm Lake, and here he passed away Thursday, March 8, 1962 having reached the age of 83 years, 6 months, and 15 days. Mr Boyce leaves to mourn his passing, a son Douglas D., of Jessup, Iowa; a daughter, Dorothy, now Mrs Edward Nelsen, and his grandchildren Mrs R.L. Saylor of Santa Ana, Calif.; Daryl and Alice Jean Nelsen of Newell; Judith Ann Nelsen of Ames; Kathleen Sue, Donna Dee, Douglas, Eugene and Randall Boyce; Brothers Louis Boyce of Chicago, Illinois, and Millard Boyce of Salt Lake City, Utah; nieces, nephews, and a large circle of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers David and William Boyce; sisters Alice Jenson and Mary Boyce.
