He had eaten his supper and seemed in good spirits when the end came. At the time of his death he was 66 years 8 months 14 days of age. George W Hawkins was the son of William Bascom and Amy Agler Hawkins. His father was a Colonel in the Mexican War, who came to Jackson Township in the early days and entered the first piece of land in the township. The land since then has never been out of the Hawkins name. George was born in one of the oldest houses in Montezuma, known as the Adkins place. He grew to early manhood on the Hawkins farm east of town with a family of ten brothers and sisters. On September 20th he was united in marriage with Mattie Woods, a union of devotion and happiness to the very last. He was variously related to the business and public life of Montezuma during these years. For a number of years he was in the grocery business. For six years he served on the city council until 1910 when he was elected mayor, the first time. This office he filled creditably for a number of terms being in office altogether ten years. His fine dignity and commanding presence well suited to the public positions he held. He was instrumental in securing the Chautauqua and was for many years president of the association. He was known in this work over the state and knew many of the talent and was called upon many times to assist the state managers in selecting the program for the coming year. He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias and was also a member of the Masonic order. In the early days he was one of the first members of the local fire department. Honors were well bestowed upon this native son of Montezuma for he was always loyal to the interests of the city. The cordial greeting, hearty hand-clasp, his cheerful smile and friendly jests as he passed along the streets will be sadly missed. George was a life long worker in the Democratic party and stood high in the councils of his party, both in the county and state. He was a good organizer and knew the leading politicians of the state, Funeral services were held from the home and were conducted by the Rev W F Vanderlip, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The services at the grave were in charge of the Masons. The funeral was large, many coming from over the county to honor the life and memory of Mr Hawkins. The beautiful yard and the entire house was filled with friends and relatives of the departed. The Masons and Knights of Pythias attended in a body and marched to the cemetery with the funeral cortege. A quartette composed of Forest Horsford, A C Heath, Walter Pollard and the Rev W F Vanderlip sang at the grave in an impressive manner. Info taken from the Montezuma Republican dated June 9, 1927
