Hough, 75, Purcellville,Leaps Into River At Point Of Rocks HAD THREATENED TO COMMIT SUICIDE Shortly after he had told friends in Purcellville, Va.. that he planned to commit suicide, George W.Hough, 75-year-old trucker and prominent churchman of Purcellville,leaped from the concrete bridge carrying Route 15 over the Potomac River at Point of Rocks about 3:40 o'clock Thursday afternoon.His broken body was found sometime later about an half mile downstream.The Frederick County Medical Examiner rendered a verdict of suicide. The victim sustained a broken neck, crushed skull and internal injuries when he landed in less than four feet of water, fifty feet below the bridge wall from which he jumped.No one actually witnessed the fatal leap, although a woman resident on the Virginia shore said she saw what she thought was a shadow drop along the bridge and later saw ripples in the river.Deputy Sheriff L. B. Reed, of-Round Hill. Va., said persons in Purcellville called him Thursday afternoon and told him that Mr.Hough had declared his intentions to take his life. Before the Deputy Sheriff could locate the aged man.he had driven his car onto the river bridge, parked it in the middle of the third span from the Virginia side before jumping off the bridge.State Troopers H. D. Basore and Brandan Duvall were called to the scene and began a search for the body, which surfaced some distancebelow the bridge. Claude Hartman. of Point of Rocks, discovered the floating body and the State Troopers recovered it.Had 111 Health Sgt. Charles V. Main, of the State Police, and Sheriff Horace M. Alexander joined the Medical Examiner in his investigation. The body was released to Lloyd Slack,Lesburg funeral director, who will complete burial arrangements today.At Purcellville, where he was well-known. Mr. Hough was said to have been in ill health for the past three years. A niece. Miss Marjory Costello, made her home with him.Purcellville residents said his wife predeceased him .and that he has no surviving children.The deceased was well-known in Loudoun County, where he had been, engaged for some years in the hauling business. He was a steward in Bethany Methodist church. Purcellville.in which he had been active for years.
